TARIFF ALTERATIONS
NO GREAT SURPRISES LIKELY. TREND OF SPECULATION. (By Tefegraph—Special to “Tribuije.”)
Wellington, Oct. 12. Although the proposed tariff alterations are being kept a closely guarded secret, there is every reason to believe that there will be no great surprises when the resolutions appear before the House to-morrow night; in fact, there is support for the belief that the main feature will be the removal of the surtax of 9-4Oths on all United Kingdom imports. This concession is expected to deplete the customs revenue to the extent of £250,000, but it will no doubt be held that this will be made up by increased iimportations resulting from greater consumption under lowered retail prices. It is understood that the reductions in existing duties which the resolutions will propose will be quite insignificant, and that the range of items affected will be surprisingly limited. Speculation points to the duties being reduced on wearing apparel, silk stockings and, perhaps, such items as ground •offee and spices.
