GENERAL NEWS. (Own Correspondent.) Some -weeks ago the secretary of the N.Z. Red Cross Society wrote to the Town Clerk stating that the council appoint a day for a house-to-house collection to be made in aid of the society’s funds. The council duly appointed Tuesday, October 11, and advised the executive accordingly. Following this up the Mayor duly advertised that the collection would be made, but owing to some reason which hits not yet transpired no official col-

lectors from the society put in an appearance. A donation of £1 18s 6d has been received by the Town Clerk from the Ruataniwha Hall Committee towards the Earthquake Relief Fund, which now stands at £3O Is. Mr J. C. Maher, who for several years has filled the position of postman in the borough, left by the mail train yesterday on transfer to Wellington. Prior to leaving he was presented by members of the local staff with a smoker’s outfit, the presentation being made by the postmaster, Mr W. J. Minogue, in felicitous terms. Mrs W. J. Pellow and Miss E. Pellow are at present on a holiday visit to Matamata. Mrs D. P. McLean returned home on Monday evening from a visit to Wellington. It was intended to open the Sports Club’s grounds for the season on Saturday, but owing to the top-dressing on the tennis courts and the croquet lawn not having consolidated sufficiently a week's postponement was necessary. The bowling green is in fine fettle, but will not be officially opened till tho 22nd. GOLF. The following team to represent the Waipawa Golf Club in their annual match with Takapau on Saturday next will leave the post office at 12.45 p.m.: —Minogue, Shackelford, F. Witherow, Bryant, R. Witherow, Clark, Walker, Adeane, Strang. During the week-end the Waipawa club will play Hastings on the latter’s links, leaving the post office at 8.30 a.m. The following will travel: — Minogue, Shackelford, Tickner, Bryant, R. Witherow, Edwards, Rust, Adeane. Guthrie, and Knobloch.
