ELECTION CAMPAIGN. COOLIDGE’S DEFENCE OF HOOVER. New York, Oct. 11. Opening the final intensive drive for Mr Hoover’s re-election, Mr Calvin Coolidge, Mr Hoover’s predecessor in the Presidency, made his first and probably only campaign speech at Madison Square Garden to-night. He stressed the sound conservative policies of the President’s administration, and protection of the value of the dollar and the gold standard against the Democrats’ inflation measures.

He scored off Mr Roosevelt’s failure to take up a definite position against the payment of 2,300 million dollars for the soldiers’ bonus. He defended Mr Hoover’s financial relief of corporations, banks and insurance companies, as all were designed to relieve the economic distress of the common people.

Senator Borah, who is taking a nonpartisan stand in the Presidential election, outlined four points in the programme for economic recovery—namely, the adjustment of world war problems, expansion of currency, elimination of extravagance in government, and adjustment of private debts to conform to the change in money values.
