AMATEUR BOXER’S DEATH
JOCKEY’S COLLAPSE AFTER
CONTEST.
SUCCUMBS IN HOSPITAL
Wellington, Oct. 12
Having lain in a critical condition since admission last night, Geoffrey Wilson, jockey, aged 17, died in the Wellington Hospital at 5 o’clock this afternoon following collapse after competing at the Wellington Boxing Association’s tournament at the Winter Show Stadium.
Wilson collapsed after the gong had gone in an amateur bantam-weight contest against D. Loveridgo (Miramar) and when removed to hospital it was found that he was suffering from severe head injuries. He failed to regain consciousness after admission. The boxer collapsed while sitting in his corner after the final gong had sounded in the first amateur bout of the evening. Toward the end of the bout he was knocked down, but rose again on the count of five and appeared willing to continue the contest. The final gong went, however, and he returned to his corner, where he began to show signs of feeling unwell.
Wilson, it is understood, joined the Silvcrstrcam Boxing Club some Short time ago and during the past throe or four months has taken part in about ten contests. He was looked upon as being a very spirited boxer.
