AMATEUR ATHLETICS

THE HASTINGS CLUB ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING. The annual general meeting of the Hastings Amateur Athletic and Cycling Club was held in the Drill Hall last evening, Mr G. A. Maddison presiding over the largest attendance of members since the inauguration of the elub six years ago. Mr Maddison briefly outlined the objects of the club and its activities last season. He mentioned that a pleasing feature of the meetings last season was the large number of entries in all events and the enthusiasm shown by the competitors. The departure of Sergeant-Majot CPLeary was a great loss to the elub in many ways, but especially as handicapper, an office in which he rendered excellent service.

The ladies’ relay team was to be congratulate-! on successfully defending the Annie Holden Cup. It has issued a challenge to the Wellington club, which has been accepted, for the Taverner Cup. The race is to take place on Labour Day and the team is training in readiness for the event.

The club is indebted to the Napier club for tho use of their loud speaker and also to Mr Le Compte for acting so capably as announcer. The club lias decided to purchase a speaker, at a cost of £2B, which will be in operation this season. The activities of the newly formed Harrier Club has been followed with much interest. The Celtic Football Club is forming an athletic club under the jurisdiction of the Hastings A.A.C.C. and it is hoped that other football clubs will follow suit. The president went on to say that he thought the N.Z. Association should foster athletics as a whole in the Dominion instead of spending the money in sending a few specialists to the Olympic Games. Excellent work had been done during the season by Mr 0. Tong and also by Mr Wall as starter. Mr J. C. Taylor had proved to be a very thorough and competent secretary and rendered invaluable service to the club last year.
