HASTINGS WOMEN’S CLUB
GARDEN CIRCLE ENTERTAINED
On Friday last members of tho garden circle of the Hastings Women’s Club were entertained by Mrs Gordon Campbell, Mrs L. H. Campbell and Mrs Boyston Campbell and also Miss Allott, at the residence of the late Mrs H. Campbell, Breadalbane, Havelock Nortn, a most delightful and interesting afternoon being spent by all in the beautiful garden. Those present were: Mesdames GDavies, Lovell-Smith, G. Glenny, Seekers, W. J. White, Bone, Goddard, Bockett, H. Harvey, Bayley, Collins, Bates, Rees-Davies, E. 0. Strattou, Duff, Darvell, Bishop, Budd, Fendall, Pitcaithly, Parkinson, A. Glenny, W. Macfarlane, Mills, Palmer, Pickering, Robertson, Kochfort, Shadbolt, Smith, Wright, Misses Dugleby, Evans, Lewis, and Evans. During the afternoon Air Greening, of Havelock North, gave a very instructive address, telling of very useful ideas in making herbaceous borders. Mr Greening also asked for the interest of the members in combating the white butterfly pest, saying that the Government had been asked to import the following birds from England, whifih would destroy the butterfly, viz., the yellow bunting, wheat-ear, windchat and stonechat. These birds are nonfruit eating but the problem is that they are migratory birds and that raises a difficulty. Mr Greening spoke of the damage done by these butterflies and said that the sunshine suited them best. Cabbages would grow if nearly choked with high sow-thistles for that shade kept the flies from the cabbages. The visitors greatly enjoyed wandering about the garden, the gay spiraxis and ixias being specially admired. A delicious tea had been provided, whjfh was set on the fawn on a table, perrect sunny weather making this a most restful and pleasant interlude, especially as tent canopies had been put up to keep off the sun’s direct rays.
At the conclusion of the most hospitable and entertaining afternoon Mrs Glenny, vice-president, thanked Mr Greening for ins address, and Mrs G. H. Davies, hon. secretary of the garden circle, heartily thanked the hostesses who had so kindly given them an opportunity of seeing this lovely garden and also entertained them with such a delicious tea.
