A NEW KALGOORLIE?

HOPES IN AUSTRALIA. THE GRANITES GOLDFIELD. A new Kalgoorlie may spring up in the heart of Australia—if The Granites, an area of 400 miles north-west of Alice Springs, contain as much gold as is reported. A decision of the Commonwealth Minister for the Interior, Mr Parkhill, last week will result in a settlement springing up at The Granites, with provision for water.

Advised by the Northern Territory police that already 45 miners are working on the Granites goldfield, Mr Parkhill has ordered the stationing of a mining warden and a police constable on the field, and has called tenders for deepening the principal well. Other conveniences of civilisation are to be provided in an area of desert waste. The Minister has authorised the distribution of first aid materials and drugs and the introduction of special sanitation precautions, An application for postal facilities is being considered by the Postmaster-General Some days ago the resident engineer, Mr Smith, and a doctor were sent to the field, and found that the water was slightly saline, and affected hy dead animal matter and snakes The most urgent need of the miners was a plentiful water supply, both for drinking and operating the field This was promptly effected by the engineer, who now reports that the well has been cleaned out, and is making 300 gallons a d»y. The supposed goal of Lasseter and the equally ill-fated Schultze brothers, Xhe Granites might have proved diffi-

cult for recent arrivals but for the introduction of a proper water supply. Three weeks ago prospectors were getting a yield of 2oz. I4dwt. under primitive dollying methods, and a later report claims an assay of 3oz. under the same conditions.
