REFUSAL TO WORK OVERTIME
LYTTELTON WATERSIDERS WANTED OLD RATES OF PAY Christchurch, Aug. 31. This evening waterside workers employed in the loading the the Federal steamer Cambridge, at Lyttelton, refused to work overtime unless paid at the old rates. Shortly after 4 o’clock the men were told that they would be required to work overtime. At 4.30 they told a representative of the agents for the vessel that they would not work overtime unless paid at the old rates. It was pointed out to them that their own federation had agreed that work should proceed as usual under the old conditions but under the new rates of pay while the conference was sitting, but the men definitely refused to work after 5 o’clock.
