ASCENT OF NGAURUHOE

ACTIVITY IN THE OBATEB. FINE VIEWS FBOM SUMMIT. The Chateau, August 30. A party of six tnunpers, led by Mr S. Jones, of the Tararua Tramping Club, made an ascent of Mount Ngauruhoe, the actual climbing time being 6* hours. The party left the Chateau Tongariro at six o'clock,'and drove as far as Maungatepopo Hut The climb wu commenced at 8,30, and the crater was reached at 3 o’clock in the afternoon. The weather conditions were excellent, but steps had to be cut all the way, the ice proving so difficult to cut that one, of the axes was broken. Great activity was observed in the crater, from which smoke was issuing instead of the usual sulphur steam. Fresh banks of sulphur and mud were being ejected and were forming a new crater wall inside the main crater. An excellent view was obtained from the summit. White Island could be seen, while the party could also distinguish clearly Lake Taupo, Mount Egmoot and Wairakei.
