IN CENTRAL H.B. WAIPUKURAU

NEWS AND NOTES. (Special Representative.) Mrs A. Colquhoun, of Waipawa, is a patient in the Waipukurau. Hospital. Mr and Mrs W. G. Royal, jalsd Miss Vera Moyal, of Palmerston North, are visiting Waipukurau as the guests of Mr and Mrs T. G. Given. Mr A. R. Jory, of Woodville, has commenced duty at the Waipukurau railway station in place of Mr G. A. Glover, who is now at Taihape. Mr E. H. de la Haye, of the local railway staff, is on annual leave, and Mr J. Wilkjns is carrying out his duties. The Rev. A. C. McLean, M.A., is attending the “retreat” being held at lona College this week in connection with the Presbyterian Church. Mrs J. J. Langridge, of Otane. who has been a .patient in the Waipukurau Hospital for a lengthy period is progressing steadily. Following are the vital statistics in , i i<urau for the month of August, the figures for the corresponding month last year being shown in parenthesis : Births 3 (3); deaths 4 (3); marriages 1 (1). The prospects for the local dairy season appear to be very bright. The Waipukurau Dairy Factory is now in full swing and the supply is considerably ahead of the figures for this time last year. Owing to several sheepfarmers turning their attention to cows, on account of the better outlook for dairy produce prices as compared with wool, it is expected that the season will be a record one. The following will represent Dannevirke (the holders of the Bebbington Shield) in the'game with the Central Sub-Union at Rugby Park, on Saturday next: Russell? Sinclair, Cochrane, Berkahn, Peeti, Brogan, Nikora, P. Russell. Cox, Ellingham, Pearson, Hagan, Sewell, Bonne, Monteith, McKay, Anderson, Smith. Two practices are being held in preparation for the contest. The junior representative game set down for Saturday v. Cen. tral, at Waipukurau, is postponed for the present. A friendly Rugby match was played at Waipukurau yesterday between Te Aute College and Waipukurau District High School, the former winning by 12 points to 8. Mr D. P. Dinnan refereed.

OTANE ITEMS

SCHOOL COMMITTEE MEETING. From Our Own Correspondent. The monthly meeting of the Otane School Committee was held on Monday night. The headmaster reported that the average attendance for the month of August, for the three weeks preceding the holidays, was 172.9—90.0 per isenf of the roll. The average attendance for the term just ended was 171.6. Mr Irwin still continues to carry out the conveyance of children very satisfactorily, and is at present carrying 37 children from Te Kura amt six from Patangata. On August 5 Inspectors D. McCaskill, P. G. Lewis, and E. Bissell paid their usual visit to the school. ■ ' The committee decided to procure towels for the convenience of the children. The secretary reported that Miss MeGreevey had been appointed for a further term of office as probationary assistant. \ W.E.A. LECTURE. The fortnightly meeting of the W.E.A. discussion group met in the library on Tuesday evening. The lecture ■was on "Disarmament and Peace,” by Mr Coombs. Mr A. Clark read the paper, which was most interesting, and opened up channels for discussion. Mr A. J. Brailsford, 8.A., staff tutor of the W.EA.., will lecture In the town board office on Friday evening at 7.30, the subject being "Whither Mankind!" The present outlook is dark with war clouds- a' vast struggle developing on a vast scale. Distress and unemployment and a seeming lack of such leadership as would grapple with these mighty difficulties. Mr Brailsford will point out that the present accumulation of troubles arises largely from our’having gained immense new powers over the forces of Nature, while our social organisation develops more slowly. GENERAL. Mr Dell, local stationmaster, la at present on annual leave. Miss Dulcie Smith, of Christchurch, is spending a holiday in Otane with her aunt, Mrs Searle. - ■' Mr J. Searle, of Taupo, is on a visit to Otane. The sea at the Kairakau beach has encroached so much recently that the council has moved the fence back, so that proprietors of cottages can have them moved back from the danger zone, rix cottages being involved. WAIPAWA NEWS On Saturday afternoon members of the Hastings Harriers’ Club will hold a "meet" at Waipawa and nm over a five or six mile course to be laid out by Messrs Collett (Waipawa) and Esam (Hastings). The run will start from .Coronation Park, where the HavelockWaipawa junior football match is to be played, and finish there. At the conclusion bf the run the visitors will be the guests of the Waipawa Amateur Athletic Club at afternoon tea. The second match of the season for the Newrick-Upton Cup between Havelock and Waipawa juniors is to be played on Saturday afternoon at 2.30. Waipawa will be represented by the following:— Collettj O’Halloran, A. Watson, Holt, Cossar, I? Hercock, C. Watson, F. Hercock, Hopkins, Cable, G. Knobloch, Ashby/ Drinkrew, Macpherson, Christensen.. weather in the morning prevented several intending competitors from, filling their engagements. The course was in excellent order, and-the greens played particularly well. Lunch and afternoon tea were served by the members of the club. The various matches re-(' suited as under:— Open championship (Hunter Rosebowl and replica).— Miss B. Smith (Waiohiki). Club championship (Mrs E. G. Williams’ Otane Cup and replica).—Mrs C. Woods. Senior medal round (Miss M'Hardy’s trophy).— Mrs C. Woods. Junior medal round (Miss 1 M’Hardy’s trophy).;— Miss M’Kenzle. Senior bogey round.— Mrs Urquhart and Miss Smith tied on handicap. Junior bogey round.—Miss M’Kenzie. The prizes were presented by Mrs J. Clark (president), and Miss Witherow (captain) thanked the visitors for their attendance. Mrs Hector Smith- (Waiohiki) replied on behalf of the visitors.
