STORTFORD LODGE SALE

STORE SHEEP IN DEMAND. . Outside buyers are beginning to realise that Stortford Lodge sale presents a good opportunity for securing both prime bullocks ana cows and heifers. The number of buyers from other districts is increasing each week. Owing to the most recent export order absorbing about 800 of the lighter weight bullocks, this class was not well represented at yesterday’s sales. The few pens offered realised an increased price of 2/6 per hundred. Heavy-weight bullocks are still very reasonable, some of the heavier bullocks only realising about 12/- per hundred. The absence -of lighter weight bullocks forced up the price of both prime cows and heifers. The store steers offered at yesterday’s sale were a useful line, and were suitable cattle for replacing drafts of fats that have been sold recently. The district generally should, at this season of the year, be able to do with large consignments of the same class of cattle. FAT SHEEP. The quality iof the fat sheep yarded yesterday was excellent, particularly draft of ewes sold on account of Tauroa Station and Messrs 0. Nilsson and C. E. Tattersail. Prime medium weight ewes were sold on account of Rosvall’s Estate, Fernhill, and Mr F. McKenzie, Gruinard. The bulk of the offering of ewes realised over 10/-. Some extra prime heavy wethers were included in the entry, but the price for this class of mutton remains stationary with very little prospect of improvement. Vendors of unfinished wethers would be well advised to transfer their entries to the store pens, where they would meet with better competition. Owing to both sales of store and fat sheep being carried on simultaneously buyers of stores are unable to be present when these unfinished sheep are being offered in the fat pens. All prime hoggets again met with keen competition, but unfinished sorts would also meet with more competition in the store pens. STORE SHEEP. The sale in this section was highly successful from a vendors’ point of view. The class of sheep yarded, mostly hoggets and wethers, are just what farmers on the Heretaunga Plain require for their farms. A line of 335 wethers from Sherenden, in medium condition, realised 11/10. Both ewe and wether hoggets met with very keen competition, the majority of this entry coming from Poverty Bay and the north end of Hawke’s Bay. Unquestionably this district can do with more outside consignments of hoggets. BROKERS’ REPORTS.
