GOLF

FROM TEE TO GREEN HASTINGS CLUB’S TOURNAMENT DATES. ITEMS OF INTEREST FROM THE LINKS.

(By

“Putter.”)

The Hastings Club’s annual tournament will take place on August 18, 19 and 20, on the club’s links near Longlands. The programme is a good one, including the Hastings amateur championship, Longlands Handicap, and stroke handicap events. The course is in exceptionally good order, and indications point to the tournament being the most successful in the annals of the club. Entries close with the secretary, Mr E. A. Murley, Box 41, Hastings, on August 16.

Further club championship matches were played during last week-end. E. A. Murley defeated T. Garrod 4 and 2 and G. Saunders won from J. Campbell 3 and 2. H. G. Davies plays J. R. Hobbs during the week-end, and this game will complete the second round. E. A. Murley will meet J. L. Patterson in the semi-final, and G. Saunders will meet the winner of the Davies-Hobbs game. The best gulf so far shown in these games was that of E. A. Murley in his match with T. Garrod. He started off in top-gear and playing most consistent golf, he toured tho outward journey in 39 to become 4 up at the turn. Garrod's golf over tho first half was rather pathey, and not up to his usual high standard. He made several mistakes, and the outward run cost him 44. Both played top-hole golf on the home run. Murley maintained his consistent rate of scoring and came home in 39, and Garrod in 38. When one takes into consideration the fact that these golfers are only week-end players, the standard of play was very good indeed. Deserved His Win.

On the day’s play Murley fully deserved his win as his shot-making was more consistent throughout. His card read as follow: —Out, 555425440 —39. In, 45444445 5—39. Total, 78. The game between G. Saunders and J. M. Campbell was a most interesting one. There was very little difference in tho shooting over the early stages of the match, but Saunders eventually got a lead on and clinched the game by 3 and 2. A feature of the inward journey was the sequence of fours registered by Saunders. He started ou the home run in great style, reeling off golf of a high standard, commencing with a 4, two s’s and flushing off the remaining holes in 4’s —an excellent bit of shooting. His card read as follows: Out, 56535445 6—43. In, 4 5 5 4 4444 4—38. Total, 81.

A Fine Card, A feature of the bogey handicap competition of the Hastings Club on Saturday last was the fine card of all square returned by J. M. Campbell from the 4 handicap mark. It was pleasing to see the winning card come from a short handicap player. As a rule the long handicap players have things too much their own way, but Campbell rose to the occasion and defeated a field of forty-six competitors, which was a very fine performance. His 78 off the stick was good shooting and showed “Jock” in his best form. His card read as follows:— Out, 45534436 5—39. 'ln, 35543446 5—39. Total, 78. W. Matthews and C. Brook made the pace too hot for the opposition in the four-ball handicap event on Thursday last. After making a rather disastrous start, they got right down to it and hit with a vengeance on the homeward journey. Going out in 45 and home in 37 Is pretty good shooting for' a henior and junior player. Their card of 82 gave them a return of 5 up on bogey.

The Parkvale Championship. The first round of the Parkvale Club’s championship has been played. The only surprise was the defeat of E. E. Rixon at the hands of the boy, R. Vesty, the game going to the 19th —a very good performance for such a youthful player. It was a case of the son winning and the father losing. Vesty’s father lost his match at the 22nd after a ding-dong battle with H. Hamilton. Other winners were: W. Matthews defeated T. Hamilton, H. Ribbands defeated C. Campbell, R. White defeated R. Attwood, H. Priestly defeated W. Blake and C. Watkins defeated E. S. Robson. E. E. Rixon and N. A. Ross showed good combination in the Parkvale club foursome competition on Saturday last. Their shooting off the stick was: 5 4 3 5 4 4 3 5 5—38; 53365445 6—41. Total, 79.

Maintaining the Interest. A noticeable feature of some golf clubs is the manner in which the club championships are got off. Others, on the other hand, are rather dilatory—at least some of tho players arc —and the final event is allowed to drag on. If the ball is kept rolling interest in the games is kept up to concert, pitch. It is a pity to have the championships so log drawn-out. • 0 Hastings Associates’ Tournament. Entries for tho Hastings associates’ golf club’s tournament, to begin on August 23 and 24, must ho iu by Satur-

day, August 20, with the secretary, Mrs 8. I. Jones. The best cards returned by the associates of the Hastings Club in the L.G.U. medal competition played during the week were Mrs. Crerar, 86 —13 —73, Mrs. H. G. Davies 96—16—80, and Mrs. Toothill 99—19—80. Mrs. Crerar’s 86 off the stick was top-hole shooting. She is playing most convincing golf. Mrs. C. Torr defeated Mrs. H. G. Davies in a club championship game 3 and 2 after an interesting set-to. Mrs Torr comes from a golfing family of big hitters, and she can hit the ball great distances. She will meet Mrs. Crerar in the semi-final, and the winner will contest the final for the club championship with Miss D. Thompson.
