A Wellingtvt tram conductor, James Shaw Bevan Rice, was sentenced today by Mr E. Page, S.M., to a month and a day on a charge of stealing a block of tramway universal concession tickets, valued at £3 10/-, from the box of a fellow employee at the Kilbirnie tram depot. The case against another conductor jointly charged was dismissed In imposing sentence the Magistrate remarked that sentence of a month entitled the prisoner to appeal only on the ouestion of law. If, however, sentence was increased a general appeal could be made. Counsel for Rice said he would prefer extension of 0110 day. Security for appeal was fixed at £25. —Press Assn.
Earthquake Insurance. A scheme for the raising of money on similar lines to that adopted by insurance companies is under consideration by the Napier Commission at the present time, its object being to provide relief in the repair of damage to dwellings such as might be occasioned in the future by earthquake similar to that experienced on May 5.
The road from Napier to the Breakwater is in particularly bad condition at the present time, mainly as a result of the heavy rain recently. There are large pools of water on tho surface <> f the road, some of them extending al most over I he whole width, and the re suit is that motorists have to drive cautiously to avoid deep holes.
