HINTS FOR SCHOOLBOY ATHLETES
HOW TO BUN A MILE RACE.. The mile is, for boys, the blue riband of athletics. When running a mile on the track, time yourself, or get a friend to do it for you, at each quarter-mile stage during a training spin and consult the results. You will then See how your speed has varied for each lap. If you are Tunning on the road got the time checked at every quarter-mile point. The first, second, and third laps should be run at more or less the same speed, although it does not matter if the first is a fraction faster. The fastest should be the last quarter. Slowly “open out” as the last lap begins and judge your final sprint according to the position of the leading runners.
If not sure of the strength of the opposition it is a good plan, if possible, to lie close up to the leaders at the end of the third lap, and see how they go when you start quickening yourpace a little.
