CAPT. “STEINY”

AUSTRALIA’S LEAGUE SKIPPER. A dozen years ago Herb Steinohrt, Australia’s Rugby League captain against England this season, was a young resident of Warra (Q.) district. A city team played there, and Bob Meibuseh, who was half-back for Queensland in the two Rugby codes, saw in Steiiiohit excellent raw material that could be developed. So this lean, bigboned man of the bush was soon in Toowomba playing in the premiership competition with Valleys. He was soon in the Toowomba team, which achieved so much fame, especially in 1924 and 1925. In the 1924 season the ‘ 1 Galloping Clydesides, ’ ’ so called for their pace and weight by the then Mayor of Toowoomba (Aid. J. D. Annaud), defeated the English touring side and supplied more than half the players for the State team. Steinohrt went to Sydney with the 1924 team, but was not included in either match against New South Wales. Ho was a member of the 1930 team in England, and was a great asset to it. The retirement of Tom Gorman, Australian captain of 1928 and 1930, left a vacancy in the leadership to which the selectors wisely appointed ‘ 1 Steiny. ’ ’ A clever footballer, Steinohrt is well fitted to command.
