In the Davis Cup challenge round Borotra defeated Vines 6—2, 6—4, 3 —6, 6 —4, Cochet defeated Allison •5 —-7, 7 —5, 7—« j, 6 —2. The matches were witnessed by a iecord crowd at Auteil, including the President and Mi Dwight Davis, the donor of the cup. Vines opened against Borotra, who made lightning replies and broke through, winning the first game amidst enthusiasm. Serving brilliantly, Borotra won the second game. Vines evened at two-all but Borotra, playing the game of his career, then took and kept the lead, mastering Vines’s service and returning his fastest shots.
BOUNDING BASQUE JUSTIFIES THE Nn ME. A record crowd witnessed two sensational matches played amid almost ungovernable uproar. Borotra, the veteran, meeting a youngster noted for virility and lightning speed, found his form greater than even his compatriots hoped. He took the services and drives which defeated every opponent at Wimbledon, exhibited wonderful court craft and showed enough of his inimitable dash and fireworks to disturb the American’s equanimity and spoil his winning touch. Vines was obviously nervous and twice double-faulted in critical games. The second and third sets were played with terrific speed. Borotra. refreshed after the rest, revealed fresh wonders of strategy, and with victory m sight appeared inspired in his spectacular returns. He had to be assisted from the court, being exhausted after the final rally. Cochet was below form in the first sot, but out-manoeuvred the American in the second set and improved in the third and fourth. He apparently non when he wanted. Both were spasmodically brilliant. ANGLO-AUSSIE GAMES. (Received 30, 9.55 a.m.) London, July 29. The Anglo-Australian tennis test was postponed on account of rain. The doubles will be played on July 30 and the singles on August 1.
