Mr. H. Howlett left Hastings this morning on a visit to Christchurch.

Mr. A. J. Fernic’s appointment as Consult for the Netherlands at Wellington was officially notified in yesterday’s Gazette.

Dr. J. T. Irving, of Bristol, England, a son of Dr. Irving, of Christchurch, returned to New Zealand by tho Ruahine yesterday on a brief holiday trip.

Dr. S. R. Cattell has been appointed senior physician on tho honorary staff of the Wellington Hospital for the ensuing two years.

The Rev. W. M. Smallfleld, of Tauranga, and formerly of Auckland, has been appointed curate at Hamilton. Mr. Smallficld, who is a deacon, will be ordained priest in September.

The distinction of the title of minister emeritus of Beresford Street Congregational Church, Auckland, has been conferred on the Rev. Lionel B. Fletcher by the members of the church.

Commandant Cook, of the Hastings Salvation Army, left this morning for Norsewood to undertake a week’s campaign in that district.

At the first meeting of the newlyelected council of Victoria University College last night, Mr P. Levi was unanimously re-elected chairman. Mr H. A. Parkinson was re-elected treasurer.

Among the scholarships awarded under the 1851 Exhibition Fund is one to Mr Richard Barker, of New Zealand, for phpsical and chemical research at Cambridge.

Tho many friends of Mrs. W. G. Anderson will be sorry to hear that she has suffered a bereavement in tho sudden death of her father, Mr. G. Demuth, at Leichhardt, Sydney. Mrs. Anderson recently retunred from a visit to her parents in Sydney.

Advice has been received by the New Zealand Olympic Association that the president of the International Olympic Council, Count Baillet Latour, will arrive in Auckland in the middle of September. He is a Belgian nobleman and the Government will extend him the courtesies usually extended to distinguished visitors.

Mr William Davis (Kumeroa, Hawke’s Bay), -was one of a number of musicians from the Dominions who contributed to the success of a musical "at home’’ held at the St. John’s Wood residence of Mr G. D. Luard, who, with Miss Macdonald of the Isles, helped to organise it, on behalf of the musicians from the Dominion. Mr Davis played the Toccata and Fugue (Bach). Guests present included Lady Snowden, Lady Harty, and Dr. Adrian Boult.—(A London correspondent.)

The retirement after 40 years’ service of Mr. A. G. Holland, a Judge of the Native Land Court, is announced. Mr. Holland, who is the youngest son of the late Mr. J. J. Holland, a former Mayor of Auckland, and member of Parliament for Auckland East, entered the Government service in 1892, as a eadet in the Native Land Court in Auckland. In 1895 he was appointed clerk of the Court. In 1906 Mr. Holland was appointed registrar of tho Court in Auckland, after having acted for two years as deputy-registrar. Upon the introduction of the Native Land Court district scheme in 1910 he was appointed a Judge, in charge ef the WaikatoManiapoto district, and in 1917 he was transferred to the Tokerau, North Auckland, district. He remained in charge there until 1924, when he was transferred to the Waiariki, Rotorua, district, where he has since remained. Mr. Holland is a proficient Maori linguist with a wide knowledge of Maori customs and usage. With one exception he has the longest service of any officer in the Native Affairs Department.
