NEWS AND NOTES. (Special Representative.) Mr L. S. F Bell, manager of the local branch of the Union Bank of Australasia, is on his annual holiday leave, and Mr H. V. Davies, of Auckland, is the relieving officer. Mr R. S. Ricketts, of Waipukurau, has left for Masterton, his father having met with a serious motor accident, his condition at present giving ms family cause for anxiety. The friends of Mr Stewart Jones, Wanstead, will regret to learn that he is an inmate of the Waipukurau Public Hospital, and that his condition is causing grave concern.

Mrs Ross Dillon, of Waipukurau, is visiting Wellington. Mrs R. W. Carpenter, of Waipukurau, is a visitor to Wellington. The funeral took place at Waipawa yesterday afternoon of a well known and highly esteemed resident of the district in the person of Mr James Kiddell, for many years manager of the Tamumu Station, who passed away at the Waipukurau Public Hospital on Tuesday. Deceased was a very old member of the Waipawa County Racing Club. The mortal remains of the late Mrs Margaret Mair Carling, aged 74 years, relict of the late Mr James Carling, who passed away on Tuesday night, were laid at rest in the Waipukurau cemetery yesterday afternoon in the presence of relatives (the principal mourner being Mrs T. Hislop, of Otane, a sister of the deceased lady) and friends. Prior to the cortege proceeding to the place of interment an impressive service was held in St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church, and burial rites were observed at the graveside, the Rev. A. 0. McLean, M.A., conducting both ceremonies. The pallbearers were Messrs Hislop (4), nephews of Mrs Carling, W. Thorburn and J. T. M. Piki.

Owing to the weather conditions the qualifying round, which was to have been played on Wednesday afternoon was postponed and will be played next Wednesday.

On Tuesday afternoon the Waipukurau Red Cross Committee met in the Oddfellows’ Hall, Mrs E. D. Rise presiding. The following members were present Mesdames W. C. Smith, W. A. Chambers, J. E. Reid, H. Duckworth, F. Hopkinson, D Scott, and the secretary. Apologies were received from Mrs H. Speedy, Mrs De Lacey and Mrs J. H. Kibblewhite. A fair amount of correspondence was dealt with including letters received in reference to the incorporation of the name of the society, from British Red Cross to “New Zealand Red Cross Society Incorporated.” The matron's report on Red Cross activities at the Pukeora Sanftorium was read and proved most satisfactory. Mrs F. Hopkinson, visitor to the Public Hospital gave a resume of her work. Before the meeting closed a vote of sympathy was passed to the relatives of the late Mrs T Paget who had done valuable work for the good of the society. The motion on being put, was carried in the usual manner
