EDUCATION BOARD CANDIDATE.

(To the Editor). Sir, —I cannot waste my time and talent in discussing how thin the ice a man is justified in treading upon to gain a certain end. Had 1 been controlling the meeting Mr. Talbot speaks of I would have felt justified in ruling a motion out of order to support a candidate for the Education Board on the following grounds:—(l) That delegates had no mandate from the School Committees they represented to support ■a candidate for the Education Board; (2) that it was outside the province of such a body to try and influence electors in the interests of one particular candidate wjiero there were three candidates of claim and merit standing in the same interests. As I said before, the way out should have been to form a different committee of those interested to work in the interests of the candidate they supported. The Country School Committee Association having been used for purposes that committees cannot agree on prejudices the standing and usefulness of that body.—X am, etc., JNO. D. HEENAN. Havelock North, 8/7/32. (To the Editor). Sir, —In reply to Mr. G. A. Maddison, chairman of the Hawke’s Bay Education Board, in your issue of July 4, I wish to state on behalf of the Country Schools Association that the very fact of a large number of country schools deciding to nominate a candidate to represent them for the Middle Ward, should prove to Mr. Maddison that the country schools are not satisfied with the present sitting member. I quite understand Mr. Maddison’s attitude in trying to retain the services of the present member as it probably suits him to do s'o, but unfortunately it does not suit a largo number of the country schools. Now, Mr. Maddison, I will put a fair common sense question to you. Do you really think that a gentleman in the Hev. Waugh’s position can do justice by holding two important positions as at present? I emphatically say he cannot do so, as neglect must follow cither to the parish or the country schools. I wish to state clearly that nothing underhand has been done by the association, and we wish to sec a good clean .fight. My experience in complaints being forwarded to your board has been that the replies arc very crude. Now, Mr. Maddison, at our Country Schools Association’s meeting held at I’aki I’aki on June 21 which was representative

of a largo number of schools, a discussion took place on the present representation on the Education Board for the Middle Ward, and it was decided to nominate a candidate for the Middle Ward and please note that this meeting was represented by about seventeen schools. Your proposal that a conference should have taken place may have done some good, but I fail to see it, as it would not have made any difference to the position, and I think it would have been better if you, as chairman of the Hawke’s Bay Education Board, had remained silent in this matter.—Yours, etc., A. E. LANG, Deputy Chairman Pukahu School. Pukahu, 7/7/33.
