THE GAME IN HASTINGS vNOBDEN CUP TEAM IN TRAINING NOTES ON CLUB COMPETITIONS. (By “Cleft Ash.”) The selectors gave the chosen fifteen for the Norden Cup a run during the week-end, and the writer has been informed that the team played up to expectations. A series of team talks has been arranged, and another practice will take place at the coming week-end.
“Cleft Ash” wishes to compliment the selectors on the team chosen, and is satisfied that Dannevirke will need to field a strong side if they wish to win.
This afternoon Old Boys will no doubt use every endeavour to stop the strong Matariki team, who are leading by one point in the competition. Kahnranaki succeeded in drawing the game with Matariki, and Old Boys were unlucky in not beating Kahuranaki last week.
The Kiwi Club turned out last Saturday wearing black arm bands as a mark of respect to their late club mate, C. Simmonds, who met his death in the recent mtor-car accident. The Hawke’s Bay Hockey Association and the Referees’ Association sent floral tributes and messages of sympathy. The Whakatu v. Hastings (A) was a very evenly-contested game last Saturday, and Whakatu are to be congratulated on their win. It was a very clean game, and reflected great credit on the players and referees. Miss MeKerchar scored the only goal in the match when the Hastings ladies were caught out of position. Though Hastings had many chances of scoring, they were kept out by the good defensive work of K. Vercoe and B. Nikera (in goal). The Thursday competition has reached a very interesting stage. The second round of fixtures was completed last Thursday, when the most important game was between Diamond R and Waimarama. Both teams were level, two points behind the loaders. United ■White. The seasiders went all out to keep thejr position in the competition, but Roach’s men proved too good for the Maoris though at no stage was there much between the two teams. The games on Thursday will commence at 2 a.m. sharp. This is to enable the Norden Cup team to have some practice in the finer points after the competition games.
United Blue created a surprise last Thursday when they broke their “duck” by defeating Karori.
Tamatea Ladies. Following up the review of the Hastings ladies’ representatives, the writer now deals with the candidates for the Tamatea representatives. The Tamatea selectors Have some very fine material from which to choose, and in my opinion a sound team can be picked fro® the following:— Goalkeepers: N. Harmer (Kahuranaki), R. Karepa (Matariki), K. Orikena (Y.M.P.). Full-backs: L. Edwards (Kahuranaki), N. Gillies (Waimarama), R. Kamau (Matariki), H. Orikena (Y.M.P.). Half-backs: M. Mohi, E. Whare (Y.M.P.), R. Kingi, R. Crawford (Matariki), P. Harmer (Kahuranaki). _ Forwards: A. Karetu, M. Nianla (Waimarama), H. Puriri, E. Matairu (Matariki), T. Niania, A. Anderson (Kahuranaki), L. Whare, A. Hape and W. Carroll (Y.M.P.). Positions of the Teams. ffhe positions of the teams in the various competitions is given below: — Men’s (Saturday).
