A Fine Performance.
Although Joyce Wethered, famous English woman golfer, no longer competes in very important events, she still engages occasionally in less-im-portant tourneys. A few weeks ago she won the women’s championship of Surrey, for the fifth time, beating her opponent in the final by six up and five to play. She had won the semi-final eight up and seven to play. It is noted that her performance of going through a senn-final and a final with the loss of only one hole probably has never been equalled by a woman golfer.
Cricketer And Golfer. A few years ago Leonard Crawley, a Cambridge blue in 1923-24-25, was considered one of the finest amateur batsmen in England’s first-class cricket, and certainly one of the most stylish. For a while after he left Cambridge he assisted Worcestershire, and later he played occasionally for Essex, but his duties as a .sejippl/qaster djd .not, (e/iyp him much leisure, for the game. Then he became prominent in golf, ami last year he won lhe English native aunt-
teur golf championship. Earlier in the present year it was indicated that he might play more first-class cricket this season than he had played in any of the last two or three seasons, although ho would be tied down to some extent by the responsibilities of a private school which he had acquired for him self. Then he was beaten in the English native amateur golf championship, and subsequently he was disposed of fairly early in the British open golf championship. Ho has been picked,as
a member of the British amateur team for the Walker Cup match with American amateurs. It will be interesting to sco if Crawley’s fine score of 155 for Essex against Warwickshire, a few ■lays ago, will now induce him to give more attention to cricket than to golf, lie is 29 years of age, and is a cousin of the younger A. M. Crawley, formei Oxford blue, and also a very stylish batsman, who plays for Kent when he can get some leisure for first-class cricket.
