SOCCER

TO DAY’S GAMES FACTORY BEAT UNITED MUCH THE BETTER TEAM. UNITED BELOW THEIR STANDARD National Tobacco Factory and United met on Cornwall Park, Hastings, this afternoon. Unite! kicked off and immediately made tracks for the factory goal, Chambers’s pass going too far. United got into their stride from the start, the combination being good. The pace was not fast. A corner to United was nicely placed. Chambers shooting just outside. Factory made progress on the left, and after lively play the ball went behind. United returned to the attack, but the Factory backs were playing well, and sent their forwards away with rush to obtain a corner which was placed behind.

United again attacked, Chambers having a hard shot, striking the upright. United were by far the better team at this stage, and shots were plentiful, but Factory’s, goal seemed charmed.

A sensation came when Factory got down on the United goal, and an infringement gave them a penalty, but Jim Clark put the ball wide of the goal.

The game brightened up for a period, but United still had rather the better of the exchanges. Bell stopped the Factory winger an! sent Simmonds away, from whose cross-kick Chambers got in a terrific shot which just missed. Brigden in United’s goal, got an occasional shot to deal with, but the Factory goalie was kept very busy, and constantly on the alert. At half-time there was. no score. SECOND SPELL. On resuming the play was fairly even, the exchanges being dull. Factory assumed a steady pressure, United slackening. A corner to Factory looked dangerous, but United cleared the goal. At length United got to work again, and Factory goalie had an arduous few minutes. A goal kick relieved temporarily, then United came again, only to be once more thwarted. A't the opposite end Bill Clark sent across, but the ball travelled too far. A raid by United and a counter-attack by Factory saw the latter draw first blood, the ball going in off Cardie. Factory 4 1 United 0 This reverse did not tend to encourage United, their raids being constantly smothered. A fine concerted movement took Factory down the field Bradley ad Rag the finishing touch giving Brigden no chance. Factory 2 United 0 United were not up to their standard and in the latter stages Factory were by far the better team, being faster and quicker on the ball. A third goal came from Bill Clarke. Factory 3 United .0 The first half was interesting, but the latter stages of the game were very dull, Factory holding the upper hand. At full time the score was:— Factory 3 United ..... 0 Mr. R. Christeson refereed.
