STORTFORD LODGE SALE OVER-SUPPLY OP BEEP. BIDDING NOT BRISK. The supply of beef at Stortford Lodge sale to-day was more than ample for requirements, 320 cattle being yarded. A large proportion of the offering consisted of cows and heifers. The quality of the heifers did not compare favourably with last week’s entry, a number being quite unsuitable for export. A draft of prime medium weight P.A. steers sold on account of Mr. F. C. Twigg, realised up to £5 13/-. A pen of P.A. steers, sold on account of Mr. J. Farquhar, Otamauri, realised up to £5 2/6. An unusually large number of station weaners was offered in the veal pens, and one particularly prime P.A. heifer realised £2. A pen of Red Polled heifers, offered on account of Mr. F. C. Twigg, realised £3 5/-. The sale right through lacked anima tion. Possibly the indifferent quality of a large proportion of the entry may have accounted for this. A pen of prime P.A. cows, sold on account of Mr. J. McNeill, Waimarama, realised up to £3 14/-. Prime ox and heifer beef ranged about the same price, 16/- per hundred, bnt plain and unfinished heifer realised from 10/- to 12/- per lOOlbs. Cow beef showed no improvement in price, realising from 10/- to 12/- per lOOlbs. FAT CATTLE. Bullocks: Prime heavy, £5 11/- to £5 17/6; prime light. £4 12/6 to £5 10/-; unfinished, £3 12/6 to £4 6/-. The entry in this section was not representative, apart from a special entry of ninety dehorned Hereford steers on account of Mr. A. Leach, Gisborne. Prices were: 31 4-yr. Hereford steers, ex Gisborne, sold at £3 12/-; 53 3-yr. Hereford steers, ex Gisborne, 40 at £3 1/-, balance at £2 13/-. FAT SHEEP. The entry in this section totalled 2000 sheep, a number of prime pens of ewes being yarded on account of Messrs W. Lockie, Roy’s Hill, and Messrs. White and Son, Otane. Up to the time we went to press the best price for heavy wethers was 11/-, and light weight two-tooths 9/3 and 9/7. A prime pen of ewes sold at 7/10, lighter weights making from 5/3 to 5/7. Medium butchers’ ewes ranged in price from 6/4 to 6/9. Owing to a reduced export schedule, lower prices are ruling for sheep purchased for export. STORE SHEEP. The offering in this section was on a much reduced scale, only 2000 sheep being offered. The entry mostly comprised breeding ewes and hoggets. Owing to the large entry of beef, this section was offered after we went to press, but a full report -will appear in to-morrow’s issue.
