WINTER MEETING. GAY THRONGS FROM FAR AND NEAR. On Saturday last it was quite exciting to watch the various races at the winter meeting of the Hawke’s Bay Jockey Club from a fully crowded grandstand, the unusually large number of people present adding greatly to the interest of the gathering, especially from a feminine viewpoint. A delightful feature of the day was the programme of bright music played by the Hastings Citizens’ Band. There were some most beautiful fur eoats worn by visitors and local residents, and interesting tailored coats of hand-woven tweeds or bright woollen and two-piece suits were varied by pretty scarves, quaint berets, or becoming furs. This meeting was one of the most successful held in Hastings for some time, and everyone seen appeared to be enjoying their day. The throngs on the lawn inelluded many officials and their wives, also well known owners of racehorses from far North and the South Island. Among those noticed were:— Mrs G. Beatsoil, reseda green frock worn with a handsome black seal coat and a black velour hat; Mrs T. V. Morrin, plum coloured tweed coat and skirt, with brown fur, and a cyclamen velour hat; Mrs H. A. Russell, black tailored doth coat and skirt with a Hack velour hat; Mrs Romaine Wright, a pretty stranded musquash coat with a smart little brown velour hat; Mrs Oswald Nelson, beautifully cut coat of green tweed with upturned collar faced with musquash fur and fur in a band on the sleeves, and a green hat; Mrs H. S. Moss, a coat and skirt of fine navy blue tweed with a navy blue hat trimmed with a white feather, and a long coat to tone; Mrs Kelly, striking tailored coat and skirt of lime tweed, with beige fox furs, and a small Mme toned hat; Mrs J. Lowry, navy blue tailored tweed suit with a brightly coloured scarf and small blue turbanberet; Mrs A. Symes, long tailored coat of black face cloth with a fur collar of skunk, and a black velour hat with ostrich trimming round the crown; Mrs H. R Peacock, becoming brown suit with brown hat and stone marten furs; Mrs Percy Wall (Hatuma), smart tailored coat and skirt of fine brown tweed, with a rough straw hat trimmed with leather, and brown furs; Mrs A. M Brodie, navy bhie coat with fur collar and a gay scarf, and a brown hat with pretty feather; Miss Jean Brodie, tweed tailored cont in green tones with a felt hat ; Mrs W. Duncan, of Hunterville, who was present with Mr Duncan, .wore a beautiful coat of stranded sable with a small turban hat of brown relieved with orange; Mrs Ivan Kight (Dannevirke), dark grey coat of tweed with a black hat and mink fur stole; Mrs Wilding (South Island), beautiful sable fur coat, and a small beige hat; Miss Williams (Christchurch), brown coat and skirt with a musquash fur coat, and brown hat; Mrs Bloomfield (Auckland), handsome black coat of Persian lamb with a small black turban clasped at the side with a diamond ornament; Mrs Baldwin (Auckland), brown coat frock cut with basque effect, and a brown hat; Mrs H. M. Bishop, fine brown Scotch tweed model frock and coat, with a brown hat; Mrs F. Donnelly, tailored coat of brown cloth with brown caracul collar, and a small brown hat; Mrs 0. Krogh, model coat of tailored and flared black cloth with high collar of grey Persian lamb, and a smart little black hat; Mrs Dudley Newbigin, palm green tweed ensemble with a pretty green hat finished with brown plaited leather; Miss G. Nelson, black cloth tailored coat with a silver grey caracul collar, and small black hat; Miss Joan Landels, tailored cloth coat in brown, trimmed with fur, and a brown and orange hat; Mrs F. Fryer, navy blue tailored coat and skirt with a blue hat and grey furs; Miss Ritchie, becoming long tailored coat in Lido blue, with a blue hat of the same shade and smoke fox fur necklet; Mrs A Reid, palm green woollen ensemble with a green hat. and orange posy; Airs R. Bridge, coat and skirt of tailored beige tweed with a rose-beige velour hat; Mrs C. Gordon, dark slate grey tailored coat and skirt, with grey fox furs and a black hat; Mrs Herrick, beige fine wool coat and skirt with a small beige hat and lung stono marten fur stole; Mrs Frank Gordon’s pretty brown coat had fur in a new tie effect on the sleeves and fur collar, with a brown hat finished at tho side with a gathered rosette, of cherry, beige and brown ring velvet; Mrs Eric Beamish was in a smart coat of ribbed duvetyn with a fur collar and sleeve trimming and her brown hat had a little coral feather mount; Airs Harold Beamish wore u tailored coat and skirt of brown tweed with a brown hat, and a fur coat; Miss Connie Symes, pretty mangold h-ll hat with brown relief and a brown musquash coat; Miss Jean
