MOASCAR CUP

TE AUTE’S EASY WIN THIRTEEN POINTS TO THREE MATCH WITH PALMERSTON N. Palmerston North, June 15. A great crowd assembled this afternoon for the inter-school Rugby fixture between Te Aute and Palmerston North High School for the Moascar Cup. The visitors were easily the better team, and their finished work gave every satisfaction. The weakness of Palmerston’s backs was responsible for the failure of the local team to show to advantage. While the game, which terminated m a decisive win for the visitors by 13 points to three, was enjoyable, no high standard of play was leached outside clever handling by Te Aute. Palmerston kicked oft with the wind, working the sideline in a successful effort and arrived at the visitors’ 25 line. It was not long before the Te Aute forwards paved the way for their backs to make a clearance, Ruru leading a thrust which penetrated far into Palmerston’s last defence. An infringement enabled Palmerston to clear, and m a succeeding movement the backs combined to bring play back to the centre line. The visitors hooked smartly from a scrum foi Pens to whip the ball to Tonga, who passed through the defence to be pushed out at the corner. Play once again settled down at the half-way line.

In the close work which followed the visitors demonstrated a marked superiority, particularly with regard to their handling of the bah. They were certainly both cool and clever. Suddenly Palmerston staged a back line movement which Pile arrested as he intercepted a pass to Ongley. The visitor came within an ace of registering a try, Palmerston clearing with effective line kicking., Te Aute were then penalised under their goal when Goldsmith held on too long. Match goaled beautifully. Palmerston 3 Te Aute — ... 0 Launching another attack the visitors quickly invaded their opponents’ territory, Wilson saving a very close call. A moment later Te Aute moved forward in another thrust, the defenders being pushed over the goal line in a struggle to save a try. In ’a fiveyard scrum Te Aute infringed and School cleared. The interval came with the visitors showing the better form. Palmerston 3 Te Aute 0 The initial movement on the resumption by the Palmerston backs was quickly smother by Te Aute, who retaliated with a movement which promised well until Crawford spoilt the prospect. Tonga then brought the visitors nearer their objective with a neat liner. From the line-out Pile was given a chance to score nicely. Newton converted. Te Aute r . M _ 5 Palmerston — 3 The vistors continued to press vigorously. Merritt intercepted a pass with a great chance of getting home, but he tried for a field goal without success. Immediately afterwards Tonga snapped up the ball and handed it on to Ruru, who got over nicely. Merritt’s kick missed. Te Aute 8 Palmerston 3 The visitors were penalised m their next thrust, which saw Tibble miss a try. The Palmerston backs fought their way to the half-way line. Campbell and Arnott broke through in a rally which Newton failed to check when the ball bounced over his head. The invasion was quickly arrested In the subsequent play Goldsmith staged a solo effort which came near to being realised. Wareham and Miller made a good clearance and Palmerston held their own for a few minutes but failed to sustain the effort. From a scrummage Pene handed out nicely to Tibble, who cut in, kicked and then beat the defence to register a popular try. Merritt converted. The game ended shortly afterwards with the score: To Aute ... aa- ... 13 Palmerston ... ... ... 3
