The next bi-monthly meeting of the Waipukurau Chamber of Commerce will be held to-night at 7.30 o’clock in Wood’s tea-room, when various matters of importance are to be considered. The Luncheon Club, with Sir Andrew Russell as the principal speaker, is to hold its first function for this winter to-morrow at 1 p.m. The first parade of the newly formed second troop of Waipukurau Boy Scouts was held on Monday night in St. Mary’s Hall there being a roll-call of 25 members. At the monthly meeting of the Patangata County Council yesterday considerable discussion ensued during the consideration of the annual estimates as to whether the maintenance of the main Napier highway should be borne by the county ratepayers generally or by the Patangata Riding in particular. The amount tentatively placed on the estimates for this work had been £125. Crs. A. McGaffin and C. R. Edgecombe held that the matter was a riding one solely. Cr. R. H White spoke in opposition to this. Cr. McGaffin then moved and Cr. Edgecombe seconded: “That no contribution from the general account bemade for the maintenance of the Napier main highway this year.” As an amendment Cr. White proposed and Cr. W. T. Kittow seconded: “That the same arrangement as last year be adopted, i.e., that the Patangata Riding should pay 50 per cent, of the cost, and the balance be charged over all the ridings, through the general account be made for the maintenported the amendment, while Crs. J. D. W. Ormond and E. T. Wilder spoke in favour of the motion, which was eventually carried, only three councillors voting for the amendment. At yesterday’s meeting of the Patangata County Council a hearty wellcome was extended to Cr. J. D. Ormond, junr., on his taking his seat at the council table for the first time. Councillors spoke in eulogistic terms of the sei-vices rendered to the council by Mr Ormond’s father, and stated that they were sure Cr Ormond would serve the council in an equally faithful and capable manner. Congratulations were also extended to Cr. R. H White on being returned as deputychairman.

It was decided at yesterday’s meeting of the Patangata county council, to send a letter of appreciation to excouncillor H. M. Christie, for the capabte and efficient manner in which he had discharged his duties as a member of the council.

Mr. C. Pattison was again elected chairman of the Patangata County Council, at that body’s annual general meeting at Waipukurau. Crs R. H White and C. R. Edgecombe spoke in glowing terms of the sterling services Mr Pattison had rendered the council oyer a period of 11 or 12 years, particular reference to the manner in which the chairman had brought the council through the last slump. The county’s finances had then been in a very bad way, but thanks to Mr Pattison’s capable handling, had improved out of sight, and now, instead of having an overdraft at the end of each financial year, was able to show a satisfactory credit balance. Mr R. H. White was re-elected deputy chairman and Mr E. C. Nation chairman of the Pourerere Domain Board.
