IMPROVEMENTS TO ROADS

WORK NEAR DEVIL'S ELBOW WIDENING AND RAISING The Napiei-Wairoa road in the vicinity of the Devil’s Elbow is now undergoing improvements, unemployed labour being used for the purpose. The men are located in camps in the vicinity of the centre of operations. The Public Works Department is responsible for the work on the hill portion of the road and the Hawke’s Bay County Council for the flat portion between the hill and Tangoio. The road is being widened considerably, and wherever possible sharp and dangerous corners are being taken off. As a result of the work which is being carried out there the surface of the road for the time being has suffered and in places it is very rough and slippery during wet weather, requiring reasonable caution on the part of | the drivers of motor vehicles. When the improvements have been completed I the surface will be brought up to the high standard of the more northerly portions of the road and motorists will 1 appreciate the difference that has been made to this very much used highway. i The Hawke’s Bay County Council is also engaged in raising the road into I rhe Tangoio Settlement. The level of I the ground in this district was considI erly reduced as a result of the earthquake, an.l since it has become very I swampy. The teps which are now be--1 ing taken i,i connection with the road I are to raise it above the level of the i surrounding land and so make it free I from the water io which during the I last year or s<’ it lias been subjected.
