His Worship the Mayor of Hastings '.Mr G. F. lloach) left this morning for Wellington on business in connection with the new Are station.

Mrs. A. J. Young, of Evans Bay, Wellington, is at present visiting Hastings, and is the guest of Mrs. E. M. Marshall, Clifton College.

An Auckland telegram reports the death of Lady Stringer, the wife of Sir Walter Stringer, aged 70. She was formerly Miss Ada Davies, of Dunedin.

After an association with the Labour Department extending over 27 years, Mr. W. Newton, Secretary of Labour, has given notice of his intention to rotire from the Public Service.

The death has occurred, at the age of 72, of Mrs. W. B. White, of Auckland, who was well-known for her benevolent work in association with Sister Esther. Mrs. White was born in Auckland, and was the wife of the late LieutenantColonel White, son of Mr. John White, a magistrate and an early historian of New Zealand.

A very quiet wedding took place on Friday evening at the residence of Mr and Mrs T. G. Prescott, Takapau, the contracting parties being Dorothy, elder daughter of Mrs and the late Thomas Prescott, to William Gordon, second son of the Rev. J. A. and tho late Mrs Asher, Lincoln road, Napier. Rev. Father Devlin officiated and only immediate relatives and friends were present. Mr and Mrs W. G. Asher’s future home will be in Napier.

There passed away last evening Mr Charles William White, of Palmerston North, after a brief illness. He was particularly well-known for his connection with the Rugby code in the Manawatu and Horowbenua districts. The late Mr White, who wyas 59 years of age, was president of the Manawatu Referees’ Association for over ten years and at the time of his passing was secretary of the Manawatu Rugby District Council. He was also secretary of the Palmerston North Garrison Band Committee.

Mr E. R. G, Steere, the captain of the Napier H. 5.0.8. senior football teain, was the guest of honour at a happy gathering of footballers at McLean Park on Saturday afternoon, when he was presented with a dressing gown and pair of slippers in honour of his selection once more in the All Blacks shortly to depart for Australia. The presentation was made by Mr S. T. Hunt, the H. 5.0.8. Football Club captain, who congratulated Mr Steere on his inclusion in the New Zealand team and upon his appointment as vicecaptain. In an appropriate reply Mr Steere thanked his team mates for their generous gift.
