Tho excuse put forward by tho absentee was that he thought that he was not required until this morning In discharging him His Honour said that a person who forgot to obey a Court summons was not worthy to sit on the jury. Tramwaymen’s Strike. “The way the citizens turned out and backed us up was marvellous,” said Mr D. J. Cummings, formerly of Napier and recently appointed superintendent of police at Christchurch, where he was in charge of the police organisation at tho time of the recent tramwaymen’s strike, at the weekly luncheon of the Napier Rotary Chib yesterday. Mr Cummings said further that people from all sections of the community, numbering 1500, came forward to assist the police and it was that which to a very considerable extent broke the back of the strike. “They arc all back at work now and sorry that tho strike ever happened. As far as Canterbury and Christchurch are concerned, there will be no further strikes,” the speaker concluded.
