Mr H. V. Uren, late of the Public Trust Office, Hastings and now of Balclutha, is paying a holiday visit to Hastings and Napier.

Mr. H. Girling Butcher, Inspector of Fire Brigades, will arrive in Hastings by mail train to-morrow afternoon, and m the evening will carry out an inspection of the Hastings Fire Brigade.

Mr. S. A. Wilson, manager of the Marton branch of the Bank of .e>-. Zealand, has received notification of his transfer to Sydney as assistant manager.

Dr. M. M. Hockin, of Hamilton, president of the South Auckb- d division of the British Medical Association, has been appointed to represent the division at the centenary meeting of the association, to be held in London in July.

A knighthood for Mr William George Goodman, engineer, of Adelaide, has been gazetted, states a London message. Sir William Goodman, general manager of the Adelaide Municipal Tramways Trust, was one time city electrical engineer in Dunedin.

Sir Newton Moore, Conservative member of the British Parliament for Surrey, now finds it will be necessary for him to reside in Canada for the major part of the year. Therefore, he has resigned his seat. Previously he denied a report that he would resign from the House of Commons to accept an appointment in Canada.

Amongst late arrivals to Hastings must be numbered Dulce Carman, the well-known writer and novelist, in private life Mrs D. Drummond, wno, with her husband and family, have arrived here for health reasons. For several years Mrs Drummond has been seriously handicapped with severe illness, at one time threatening blindness, and now, by the orders of the specialist who saved her sight, she has come to reside in sunny Hastings, in the hope that our splendid climate may completely restore her to health and strength. Those amongst us who have read and enjoyed her splendid serials in various weeklies, will join with her many friends and large circle of admirers in hoping that Mrs Drummond will soon be completely restored to health, and that the name of “Dulce Carmen’’ will shortly take the prominent place in our papers that it occupied a few years ago.

Mr. E. P. Cox, secretary of the Egmont Racing dub, Hawera, who has been appointed secretary of the Wellington Racing Club, has had a career as a soldier covering an unbroken period of 22 years. Enlisting in the volunteer forces (Wellington - West Coast Regiment), he transferred to the Taranaki Regiment in 1910. Tn 1914 he was one of tho first officers accepted for active service, being appointed to the Wellington Regiment with the rank of captain. He embarked with the Main Body, N.Z.E.F., and saw service in Egypt and on the .Suez Canal, and participated in the landing at Anzac, subsequently taking part in the various engagements which culminated in ths memorable action at Chunuk Bnir. During these operations he was twice mentioned in dispatches, and was seriously wounded, which ultimately caused his return to New Zealand from England. In 1916 he was attached to the New Zealand Staff, and acted as group commander in Taranaki until the end of the war. He succeeded to the command of the Ist Battalion, Taranaki Regiment, in 1919. and was promoted lieutenant-colonel. He retired in 1925. when he was posted to the reserve of officers.
