RELIEF WORKERS’ STRIKE

ALL JOBS PICKETED. Wellington, Jan. 25. No men started on any relief jobs in Lower Hutt, Petone or Eastbourne this morning except on the Western Hutt ro , where seven men proceeded with thru work in the presence of a police constable. All jobs were picketed. Some men desired to begin work at Petone. but under the circumstances no actual request was made to the men EASTBOURNE DRAINAGE. ONLY POSSIBLE AS RELIEF JOB. Mr. A. Walker, chairman of the Eastbourne Relief Committee, said yesterday that if the Eastbourne drainage work had not been started as a relief work it would not have been possible to do it for several months, as the Local Bodies’ Loan Board was keeping a very ti ’it hand on borrowing. It is understood that the position is much the same in Hutt and Petone, where the local bodies have just about reached the limit in the amount of work they can provide for relief purposes. RELIEF WORKERS’ MEETING. The relief workers will meet to-night in the Winter Show buildings, and not in the Dominion Farmers’ Institute as previously arranged. The change has been made because of the considerable interest shown in the resolution to be placed before the meeting. As the vote will be taken by secret ballot, it is expected that there will be a large gathering of men.
