OBITUARY

SIR ALFRED YARROW. PIONEER MOTORIST London, January 24. The death is announced of Sir Alfred Yarrow, shipbuilder, whoso use of a steam driven motor car in 1861 was responsible for an Act ordering that mechanical road vehicles bo preceded by a man carrying a red flag. MR. H. P. STARK. The death occurred in the hospital at Mercury Bay, North of Auckland, on Saturday, of Mr. Henry Preston Stark, a visitor from Australia. lie was ou holiday for fishing, but developed pneumonia. Retired from the service of the Bank of New South Wales about six months ago, he was formerly well known in New Zealand. He joined the Bank of New South Wales at Gisborne in 1882 and was for some years stationed at Thames, whore he was assayer. He was later manager for the bank at. Greymouth and Hokitika. Tn 1012 ho was transferred to Sydney as manager of the. bullion department of the hank. At the time of his retirement ho was manager of the Hunter’s Hill (Sydney, branch, a position he assumed in 1926. Mr. Stark, accompanied by Mrs. Stark, rame to New Zealand nt the end of October, intending to spend about four months in the Dominion. It was their intention to leave next month on an extended tour of the world.
