GENERAL NOTES

It is wonderful, says a Taranaki writer, how some horses improve when H. Gray takes tile mount. Chrysology failed in the weakest of company in Hawke’s Bay during the holidays, yet he comes on to Trentham defeats a much stronger field in tlie Anniversary Handicap. Gray cannot always work the oracle, but very many racegoers are always willing to gamble on the chance of his doing so. Though the Kilbroney gelding Compris failed over the two-mile journey in both the New Zealand and the Auckland Cups he has collected all the big mile and a-nalf events in which he has competed this season. He won the O.J.C. Metropolitan, the A.R.C. Handcap and now the Wellngton Cup, all run over the mile and a-half journey. He is very hollowbacked—perhaps the most hollow-backed horse that has raced in the Dominion for years—but this does not seem to affect his galloping ability. His dam, Lady Helena, is not in the Stud Book, by his sire, Kilbroney, was a great stayer himself and he seems to be able to give this quality to his progeny, one of whom, Concentrate, won this event two years ago. and another, Kihnoon, deadheated for first with Oratress in 1920. Arrangements have been concluded between Miss E. Hinds and the New Zealand Metropolitan Trotting Club for Harold Logan to attempt a twomiles record for a purse of £2OO at the club’s summer meeting on 6th February, states a Christchurch exchange. Miss Hinds recently wrote to the Forbury Park Trotting Club stating that, while she made no promises, if circumstances were such that the club wished Harold Logan to attack his own time for a mile, this would be favourably considered. * * • The Southern trainer, R. C. N. Reed, has been re-granted a rider’s license, and lately has been doing riding work at Wingatui in order to get fit for business. Before setting up as a trainer Reed was among the best light-weights of the day, and he should receive plenty of demand for his services in the saddle. • • • One of the best efforts recorded over six furlongs at Ellerslie for some considerable time was registered last week by Puriri Park, who traversed the distance in Imin. 14 4-ssec.. finishing up his task in good style. This Australian-bred Treclare gelding is engaged in the Zealandia Handicap, seven furlongs, on the first day of the Takapuna meeting, and despite the fact that he has not raced since the spring his prospects of finishing in the money would appear to be good. He has been troubled with his teeth for some time past, but is now thriving really well. « * * Two Wanganui horses who wore sore after their racing at Foxton last week and who have been turned out for spells, arc the maiden winner. Arastar, and Paratoo. Arastar was very sore on his preliminary before the Foxton race, and it is probable that he will require a long rest. Paratoo has been more or less sore all the season. * * * According to a southern report, the j Orari trainer. R C Keeper, is keeping Gnllivanter in solid work with a view to having him ready fn> jumpin' l "vets Inter on Ho has shown his nbilitv over the big fences. and. n soft track is being awaited to send him tn Riocfirton for some schooling. He is a promising type of steeplechaser and possesses a reasonable amount of speed, sn he may he a welcome addition to the ranks of cross-country performers during the jumping season.
