THE UMARU MEETING. Timaru, Jan. 23. The Timaru Trotting Club’s summer meeting was held to-day in tine weather. The track was fast, but a high nor’wester had a tendency to slow up the times. The attendance was up to the average. The totalisator handled £9284, compared with £10,720 for last year. An inquiry was held into the running of Black Lion, the winner of the Pareora Handicap, the stipendiary steward alleging inconsistent running on the horse’s previous performance in the President’s Handicap. Challenge Stakes.—Golden Gate 7.3 (Knox) 1, Holdfast 7.4 Simpson) 2, Tom Pinch 9.0 (Cook) 3. Nineteen started, including Pentheus, Bay Acre and Financial. Although Tom Pinch was in front 100 yards from home, he tired and Golden Gate did best to win by a neck, with Tom Pinch a length and a quarter back third. Pentheus was fourth. Agua Caliente officials report that the owners of Plucky Play have decided that that horse will not take part in the special race, but assurances have been received that Doctor Freeland will participate, and the officials say the race will be run if there are but two entrants. The New York “Herald-Tribune” racing editor, discussing Phar Lap, says the contemplated test race should prove an ‘ ‘ excellent tost <.* his form on a dirt track. One real race is worth a dozen work-outs.” The writer adds that it will surprise no one if the horse is also entered in many big eastern handicaps which have not yet closed, and discusses the differences between the Australian and American racing mile.
