BOWLING

EAST COAST CENTRE MEETS. COMING TOURNAMENTS. A meeting of the East Coast Centro was held at the Napier tub's pavilion on Friday evening. Present: Messrs W. Williams (president), in the chair, Cooke (Waipukurau), Critchley (Wai pawa), Pickering (Hastings), Kelly (Omaranui, Twigg and 8. Smith (Bluff Hill), A. Renouf and P. Bear (Napier), R. McCarthy (Port), A. Houston (Wairere). Apologies for absence were received from delegates for Havelock North, Kia Toa, and St. Leonards. CHAMPION FOURS. In reference to the champion fours the centre secretary, Mr P. J. Bear, asked for direction regarding entrance fee. In the past a charge of £2 per rink was made, but this had been reduced to 30s. Even in the days when £2 was charged it had resulted in losses, but then the centre had been lavish in issuing tickets for refreshments, etc. Mr Critchley thought the centre might reduce the fee to £l. The secretary quoted cost of banner, green fees, etc., showing an entrance fee of £1 would not cover expenses. He added: “Anyone can run a tournament at a loss, but 1 prefer to meet expenses at least.’’ In answer to a question by Mr Twigg, tho secretary stated that profits had been made previously at these tournaments and the money distributed in charity. Times were changed, however. Mr Critchley then altered the motion to entrance fee £1 10s, including teas and green fees. Seconded by Mr Houston.

Mr Somerset-Smith thought it was a privilege for a bowler to play and he should bear the expense. Tho motion was carried. The games are to bo played on February 0, 13 ami 20, the grounds Waipukurau, Hastings and Napier, entries to close Monday, February 1. Mr Kelly said his club found it a heavy expeiiso travelling. Mr Critchley: They would only have to travel to Waipukurau Hastings and Napier were central for Omaranui.

CHAMPION PAIRS. This competition was fixed for March 5 and 12, St. Leonards green to be the grounds of play. Entrance 20s, teas extra. CHAMPION SINGLES. The secretary stated that March 19 and 26 had been fixed for the champion singles. They now found that the 26th was Easter Saturday and Bug gested March 18 and 19. He thought it could bo done, as competitors would probably play five and four games each day. The average time was one hour ten minutes. This contest was set down for the Port Club’s green . Air Smith was against two consecutive days playing. It was far too heavy. A motion by Messrs Critchley ami Renouf, that the dates be March 19 and April 2, was carried Mr McCarthy stated that the Port green at present Was in very good order. Mr Smith wanted to be assured that this green would be playing true on both occasions. If not, the centre’s secretary and treasurer to make other arrangements.—Agreed to. After deciding to make an entrance fee of 10s per man the discussion dosed.

SLOW BOWLING. The secretary stated that the match between Engebretsen and McLennan at the New Year tourney occupied four hours, and that between Bissell and Bewley four and a-quarter hours. Ho did not wish to cramp anyone’s play, but it looked like a lot of time unnecessarily wasted. Mr Renouf: Too many inquests on the heads. Tho secretary: At the Easter tournament only 18 heads would be played. The average time for a game was 2 hours 20 minutes, and ho thought a limit to 24 hours reasonable. Mr Smith: We must have a time limit, otherwise many games would ho held up. - . It was decided that a time limit of 21 hours be enforced. Entrance ice, 255.

WEST COAST TOUR. Mr Critchley wished to know if anything had been arranged for the proposed tour of the West Coast during March. The secretary replied that until be could learn who were prepared to make the trip it was useless him communicating with other centres. Mr Renouf said he had recently visited Auckland and was surprised at the enthusiasm shown there. Almost every club had its tournament going. Hero wo appeared to have got into a rut. M e were lacking in ginger and could not expect other teams to come hero it we .lid not move around. Tho secretary produced two itineraries. Ono dealt with an eight-day trip in which games were suggested being played at Dannevirke, Palmerston North, Wanganui and Taranaki. Tho other tour was round Mt. Egmont, play ■ ing 12 games in six days. The matter was left in tho hands of delegates to see what measure of support would be forthcoming.

SHIELD PRESENTATION. It was resolved that the Centre's Shield be presented to the Bluff Hill Club on Saturday, 30th inst. The Centre will be represented by Messrs Mayo, McCarthy, Renouf, end Bear, while the Napier Club (previous winners) are to be invited to be present.
