THE WILDING SHIELD CANTERBURY TAKES SINGLES. BARNETT DEFEATS WILSON. Auckland, Jan. 24. Saturday was a real carnival day for tennis enthusiasts in Auckland, as tho final of the Wilding Shield and a test match between ladies ’ teams representing New Zealand and Now South Wales were commenced at the Stanley street courts. The weather was beautifully fiue until shortly before 5 o’clock, when the sky clouded' over and drizzling rain caused play to be adjourned for nearly an hour. Canterbury did well in the singles matches aga'inst Wellington, winning three g,ames and eight sets against Wellington’s one win with two sets. Chief interest.was centred on the meeting of Wilson and Barnett. Tho young Canterbury player repeated his success of the previous days, when he defeated Stedman and Bartleet, by winning in a keenly fought contest notable for wonderful recoveries by both. Wilson attacked from tho outset, going to the net as often as bossible, but Barnett frequently passed him with pretty shots. Tho games wore nearly all long and interesting duels. With a set each Wilson came up fresh after a brief interval and led 4—love. Barnett, however, made a great recovery and, after drawing level, took the match with consistent tennis. The contest between Angas and D. G. France was one of steady play without a great deal of variation.. Angas was more accurate and varied his length to good effect. France frequently passed down the side-tines with beautiful shots, both forehand and backhand. It was mostly a game, of angling for corners in a game which was always interesting but never spectacular. Glanville defeated Roussel in two straight sets, his steadiness being too great for the youthful Wellington player. The meeting of A. L. France and Patterson did not provide, much bright tennis. After- the first few games France asserted his superiority, showing the greater enterprise. Results:— SINGLES. Angus (Canterbury) beat D. G. France, 6 —2, 4—6, 6—2. Barnett (Canterbury) beat Wilson, 5— 9—7, 7—5. Glanville (Canterbury) beat Roussel], 6— 6—4. A. L. France (Wellington) beat Patterson, 6 —4, 6—3. DOUBLES. France and Franco v. Angas and Barnett, 4 all (unfinished). Wilson and Roussell v. Glanville and Patterson, 4—l (unfinished}.
