GAMES IN HAWKE'S BAY HASTINGS OLD BOYS BAT WELL. RECORD BATTING AGGREGATE OF SEASON. The concluding series of the second round of the Hastings senior grade cricket competition were commenced on Saturday, where there was a variety of performances. The wickets were hard and fast, favouring the batsmen rather than the bowlers, who, however, succeeded in securing a surprising number of wickets throughout the day. Old Boys struck batting form against last season’s champions, Tomoana, and compiled 229, the highest aggregate of this season in club games. This success was largely duo to a splendid knock by Beuth, who, in his initial appearance in this district, put together 89 runs in excellent fashion. In the bowling line Mitchell lived up to his reputation and captured eight wickets at a cost of 114 runs. Tomoana have lost two wickets for 31 in reply. In the second senior match Hastings made 142, the effort being disappointing considering that Watkins contributed a bright and lively 78, more than his ten companions combined succeeded in doing. Whakatu were fighting hard when stumps were drawn with six wickets down for 86 runs. H. 5.0.8. v. TOMOANA This game was played on Cornwall Park and Old Boys batting first were dismissed for 229 runs. Batting for Old Boys the best displays were given by M. Beuth 89, Fippard 28 and Newdiek 24. In Beuth’s display he hit no less than 12 boundaries. Bowling for Tomoana, Mitchel] delivered 22 overs and was most successful, taking eight wickets for 114 runs. JUNIOR GRADE H. 5.0.8. v Tomoana Tomoana in their first innings compiled the splendid total of 197. The best scorers were Corlett with 73, including 11 fours, Startup 57, including seven fours, Glenday 18 and Marks 16. H.S. 0.8. had seven bowlers on, the most successful being Stedman, who took six for 26, Newling one for 36 and Irwin one for 33. H. 5.0.8. were nine wickets down for 116 runs when stumps were drawn, Jonson having made 37 and Hamilton 34 not out. Bowling for Tomoana, Corlett took three for 24, Seed two for 37, Startup two for 18 and Glenday two for 17. ALBION v. HAVELOCK NORTH. Batting first on the Village wicket, Albion made 78 against Havelock North, the best efforts being T. Goodall 17, Broadhurst 17 and Rogers 10. Liley took five wickets for 16 and Tunnicliffe three for 15. In reply the Villagers could muster only 43 nins, D. Fickling heading the list with Id, and Meads next with 11. E. Goodall three for 3. T. and Broadhurst three for 6 were the successful bowlers. In the second innings Albion batted out time, losing three wickets for 14, to secure a firstirinings victorv. NAPIER MATCHES. TWO THREE-POINT WINS. The fifth series in the Napier competition concluded on Saturday, when Technical Old Boys tightened their grip on the championship by increasing their lead to three points. United succeedeu in deposing Old Boys for runner-up honours. In their game with St. John’s, Tech. Old Boys had to be content with a first innings win, the Saints, though obliged to follow-on, succeeding in passing the double century in both innings. United also gained a three point win. SENIOR GRADE. UNITED v. H. 5.0.8. United had no difficulty in securing a first innings victory against H. 5.0.8. When play was commenced on Saturday afternoon Old Boys had completed their first innings for 187, while United had lost three wickets for 37. O’Brien and Heath, the two not-out men, added another 38 runs to their partnership before the former was caught behind the stumps off H. Reaney. The innings closed for 224. The best batting display was given by J. Stevens, who con tributed 52 useful runs to United’s score before he was caught off T. Reaney. Heaney’s bowling was well up to the high standard he has been displaying of late, he securing seven of United’s wickets for 85 runs. After knocking up 141 runs for six wickets, Old Boys declared their second innings closed, leaving United 105 runs to make to gain an outright win. The eound position in which Technical 0.8. placed themselves in their first innings against St. John's, when they made 362, stood them in good stead and enabled them to secure a first innings victory. Their high score was needed, however, for St. John’s made a gallant endeavour to catch up to them by knocking up 223 in their answering innings. Fitzwater, Brain and White were responsible for most of the latters’ runs. For Technical 0.8. E. Elliott and Pirie secured the majority of the wickets, the bowling of the latter being especially steady. In an endeavour to secure a fourpointer, Technical ordered St. John’s to follow on, but their hopes were soon dashed to the ground when the latter took command of the bowling and raised the score to 216 for the loss of eight wickets. TARA DALE With the assistance of two bright batting performances by Boggs and Ellis, Taradale have placed themselves in an invincible position, and are assured at any rate of a win on the first innings. Technical batted first and made 128. Double-figure scorers were Brimer 45. Vercoe 24, Northe 20 and Atkinson 11. The successful trundlers for Taradale were Ellis (one for 47), Duthie (five for 43), Boggs (one for five) and Stewart (three for 12). When stumps were drawn Taradale had lost three wickets for 218. A. Boggs was Technical’s stumbling block, bat. ting confidently to make 115. His knock included one six and 18 fours. Another good innings was played by Ellis, who was bowled when 59. A. Whitton made 15, while Duthie remains undefeated at 18. ST. JOHN’S v. SWAILES St. John's prospects of obtaining a victory in their match against Swailos are so far not very bright, for the latter team has obtained a lead of 73 on the first innings. Batting first, Swailes knocked up 194 runs. Davison and Blackledge established a sound partnership early in the innings, knocking up between them 116 runs before the latter was caught and bowled. Davison made 95 and Blackledge 43. The rest of the team presented no difficulty, the only other double figure scorer being Timlin, with 15. For St. John’s, H. Barlow secured four wickets for 62, Wilson two for 44 and N. Triggs three for 35.

St. John’s replied with 121, of which H. Barlow made 26, N. Triggs 24, HomeDouglas 18, McArtney 16 and ThorneGeorge 12. Maintaining an exceptionally good length, Blackledge secured six of Swailes’ wickets at a cost of 58 runs, w’hile the remaining three went to A. Swailes for 44 runs. The latter team commenced its second innings five minutes before stumps, and had lost one wicket for 15. UNITED v. SCINDE , In the present stage of this match, United have a lead over Seinde of 60 runs on the first innings. Electing to bat first, United made 159 (Stephenson 42, Wordsworth 22, Crosse 20, Wyllie 19 and Seed 12). For Seinde, Tyers took one wicket for 30, Forsyth three for 41, Sweeting two for 29, Hughes four for 34. Seinde replied with 99, the double figure scorers being Moss 18, Bowland 13 and Sweeting 11. Wordsworth took three wickets for 19, Seed three for 25, Wyllie two for 19 and Minett one for none. In their second innings United have raised 44 runs at a cost of five wickets. Cross remains undefeated at 32. HIGH SCHOOL v. H. 5.0.8. On the first innings of this match Old Boys have secured a lead of 46 runs. The schoolboys had first use of the batting crease and knocked up 139. The highest scorer was Bickerstaff, who made 26. Jeffery made 25, Butler 20 and Wilson 19. The wickets for Old Boys were shared by Hawthorne (three for 54), Griffin (one for six), R. Barlow (two for 47), Broad (four for four). A fine performance by Broad, who carried his bat for 50, raised Old Boys’ answering innings beyond School’s. The innings closed for 185, other double-figure scorers being F. McKinnon and Evans 18, Hawthorne 17, R. Barlow 16 and Swinburne 12. For School Wilson took two wickets for 15, Palmer one for 33, Simpson four for 48, and Brown three for 69. FRIENDLY MATCH DALGETY’S DEFEAT KAIWAKA A most enjoyable afternoon’s cricket was had at McLean Park on Saturday afternoon, when a friendly match was played between Dalgety’s team and Kaiwaka. The former obtained a victory on the first innings with 61 runs to the good. The outstanding scores of the afternoon were made by Appleby and Hayden (Dalgety's), who both knocked up 51 runs.
