EXPORT LAMB COMPETITION

RESULT OF JUDGING AT DANNEVIRKE. At the Dannevirke showgrounds on Wednesday judging took place in the export lamb competition held under the auspices of the New Zealand Meat Board and the Dannevirke District A. and P. Association. The competition was open to competitors from Waipukurau to Woodville, the entries from the latter place being judged there and then sent to the works, all the others, 44 in number, being penned and judged at Dannevirke. The winner of the New Zealand Meat Board’s competition decided on dead weight, holds the Perpetual Challege Shield for the North Island, but in conjunction with it the Dannevirke A. and P. Association had its own competition, two prizes being awarded, judged on the export value of the lambs as they stand in the pens. Mr W. McGillivray who did the judging, made the following awards: Duncan Holden, “Oakworth,” Waipukurau 1 R. F. Gregg, Tiratu 2 H. B. Stuckey, Awariki 3 Duncan Holden, Waipukurau ... v.h.c. H. Hutchinson, Umutaoroa h.c. C. R. Edgecombe, Hatuma c. Commenting upon his task the judge said it had been a most difficult one. A great many of the pens had one faulty lamb along with two outstanding specimens. The faulty lamb was deficient in shape and light in the hams. Some of the placed pens had these defects in one lamb, and it was explained by the fact that exhibitors had difficulty in getting three lambs down to the weight governing the competition—3Blbs freezing weight. Some of the lambs were travel stained, haying come from a distance. Mr McGillivray said that the quality all through was verj’ good, considering the backward spring and the dry conditions He finally remarked that it was impossible to arrive at a decision until he got the top pens together. Then some of the pens that had impressed him singly failed in comparison.
