BETTING IN ENGLAND TOTALISATOR LITTLE USED London, Dec. 10. Lord d’Abcrnon, presiding at the Thoroughbred Breeders’ Association presented proposals for putting the totalisator on a paying basis. He revealed that the totalisator turnover in 1931 was £4,000,000 compared with £3,000,000 in 1930, although the total betting in 1928-29 was at least £46,000,000 on the course and £42,000,000 off the course. The money passing through the totalisator was manifestly a quite inadequate fraction of the total. It was also calculated that 20,000,000 people attend the greyhound tracks, where betting amounts to £12,000,000 yearly. Unfortunately coursing was omitted from the Totalisator Act. NEWMARKET BALEB. STREPHON CHANGES HANDS London, Dec. 9. The Newmarket bloodstock sales realised 47,192 guineas, compared with 93,000 last year. Messrs De ane and Somerville, who are dissolving partner ship, sold Strephon for 200 guineas to Mr. Rushell. GENERAL NOTES — ? — 12 TURF On the New Plymouth track last Tuesday morning Lady Quex, who was having her first gallop since Feilding, showed that she is a fit mare by reeling off ralf a mile in 49 4-ssec. She took 25 3-5 for the first two but dashed over the last couple in 24 1-5. This was a fine effort on her-part. * •. • . • Limex showed plenty of pace when she won the Trial Plate at Taumarunui, and she will have some friends if saddled up for the Waipa Plate, a sixfurlong weight-for-ago event at Te Awamutu on Saturday. She has had three races altogether, her first start being at the Waikato meeting last month. She showed a lot of pace on that occasion, but was fractious at the barrier at Takapuna and spoiled her chances. She- is reported to have got 6Vef het 'Waywardness since then, and with an even breakaway she should be very troublesome. * c • I’e Money has done well since she raced at Takapuna and will strip in first-class condition for the Auckland summer meeting, th hei- last five efforts she has only once been out of a place. She beat Karahgapai by a head ill the Awakino Handicap, one mile, at the Dargaville meeting, held at Avondale recently, which was a good per. formance. This mare is engaged in hack events at Ellerslie and with any luck should collect a stake. • • • Simeon has been accepted for at Tc Awamutu on Saturday, and if produced he should go well. He was taken to Auckland from'Gisborne for the spring meetings, but owing to going amiss could not be started. However, upon returning he accounted for both hurdle races at the Poverty Bay Turf Club’s spring meeting. Thfise were both mile and a half events, and among the field he bent was Russet Moor, who scored at Ellerslie. Simeon is also entered for hurdle rac§s on each day of the Auckland- summer meeting. • • • Taurua raced well at Takapuna, winning the Ponui Handicap, seven furlongs, and the' Ngataringa Handicap, of similar distance. In the latter event he beat a good field and showed great grit in holding off Vali over the last bit. ■ Taurua is accepted for in the Pa-terangi Handicap, one mile, at Te Awamutu bn Saturday, and, despite his big weight,-should again go well. ■ • * • Lady Lulu has raced consistently during the last few weeks and she should again be hard to beat in the Waipa Plate at Te Awamutu on Saturday. At the last Waikato meeting she ran third in the Trial Stakes, six fun longs, and at Taumarunui finished second in the Trial Blate, six furlongs, to Limex. and won the Owhango Handicap, one mile, and the Ohura Handicap, of similar distance. Lady Lulu is a full-sister to Valkon, and she is becoming more solid with racing.

Soloist, the three-year-old halfbrother to Supremacy, who has not raced for some time, is due to make his in the Kihikihi Handicap at Te Awamutu on Saturday. Last season Soloist contested six races, winning the Victoria Handicap, six furlongs, at the Auckland autumn meeting. He was unplaced in his other five starts. Since that success he has only been saddled up on two occasions. Soloist is entered for several event# at the Auckland summer meeting. King Ford has been paid up for in the Flying Handicap, six furlongs, at Te Awamutu on Saturday. At the Te Kuiti meeting, held on this course, last May King Ford won a double, and from that on he showed good form, eventually scoring at Ellerslie. King Ford made his appearance this season at the Takapuna meeting last month and on the second day finished third to High Comedy and Royal Ruler in the Oautley Handicap. This indicated that he was returning to his best form, and if he has gone on the right way since then he should make a good showing in the Flying Handicap at To Awamutu next Saturday. • • • Terra Firma, who finished fast in third place in the Laghmor Plate at Ashburton on Saturday, has not long been in the South Island, and the performance points to the possibility of his being a racing proposition yet. He was formerly owned by the Awapuni trainer. G. W. New, but became afflicted in the wind and was presented to ius present owner (Mr. J. W. Pankhurst) a couple of months ago. A four-year-old hay gelding by Acre from the Foremost mare Minor, Terra Firma is probably as big as any of the progeny of Acre, several of whose stock have shown great size. For New he dead-heated with Jayson in third place behind Coon Song and llosshire in the Trial Plato at the Wellington winter meeting last year, then failed at Otaki at his only subsequent start. Realising what was the matter with him, New turned him out in the paddock for a year on the chance that he might grow out of the trouble. # • • Ladv Musk won the Trial Stakes at the Waikato spring meeting after finishing second to Whakapara in the Hore Hore Handicap, six furlongs, at the Dargaville meeting. She was started in the Stanley Hack Handicap, seven furlongs, at the recent Takapuna fixture and dead-heated with Princess Bede for second place, a length behind Whakapara. Lady Musk is engaged in the Orakau Handicap, seven furlongs, at Te Awamutu on Saturday, and on the performance mentioned she will have to be considered. • • • Red Arrow, trained by F. Christmas for Mr. E. Gates, made a promising showing in his first appearance in public in the Winchmore Hack Handicap at Ashburton on Saturday, states the “Press.” He was slow away and ran very greenly during the middle stages, but when ho settled down to work in the straight he executed a strong finishing run. He is an upstanding four-year-old gelding by Arrowsmith from the All Red mare Red Queen, dam of Gay Queen and Master Clarence, and with more experience is likely to do good service for his connections. • • • Prince Pombal is not being hurried a great deal in his work, and there would appear to be a little doubt as to whether fie will make the trip to Ellerslie for the coming summer meeting of the Auckland Racing Club. It was his owner’s original intention that he should do so. but it will not be surprising if a change of plans is revealed. If he does race at Ellerslie, probably E. A. Keesing will have the mount. This half-brother to Veilmond will be remembered as having run a great second to Posy at Trentham in October. • • • The Lackham three-year-old Golden Wings is the early favourite for the Railway Handicap, to be run at Ellerslie on Boxing Day. With one pound more than ho carried into second place in the Stewards' Handicap he cannot be regarded as being badly treated by the handicapper, but he is likely to encounter stiffer opposition in the northern capital than he did at Riccarton. In addition to the first and third horses in the Stewards’ Handicap, Cimabue and Croupier, he will be faced with Laughing Prince, Cadland, Kara, poti, Supremacy, Lady Quex, Silvermine and Arisus, amongst others, and this is a far more classy field then that which went out at Riccartpn. Nevertheless Golden Wings is brilliant out of the barrier and has tons of pace, two very valuable assets on a track like Ellerslie. • • • After his fine showings at Takapuna Baroscope is being mentioned as likely to prove one of Bronze Eagle’s most dangerous opponents in the Great Northern Derby on New Year’s Day. After having none of the luck of the running in the Alison Cup he was running on in third position at the finish, while on the second day he scored a very convincing win in the St. Andrew’s Handicap Baroscope can certainly claim a stayer’s j>edigree as his sire, Weathervane, was by Lemberg, a Derby winner, from In Vain, a full sister to the triple crown winner Flying Fox. His dam, Tortrix, is by Martian from the Torpedo—Honeysuckle mare Tortulla, who carried 8.1 first past the post in the New Zealand Cup of 1901. With blood like this on both sides the mile and a half journey on New Year’s Day should have no terrors for the Waikato colt. • • • For the convenience of investors, there will be a ten shillings totalisator at the Dannevirke one-day summer meeting on Wednesday next.
