GENERAL NOTES

Laughing Prince, who rather luckily dead-heated with Inflation for first place in the Feilding Stakes, has contested 55 races. Of these, he has won 19, been second in 11, and third in eight. His star act was the New Zealand Eclipse Stakes, which he won four times before it was cut off the bill of the Wanganui Jockey Club. • • » Vali was a disappointment on the second day at Takapuna. He was considered very unlucky to get the worst of the trouble that occurred a short distance from the post on the opening day and this caused him to be a shortpriced favourite on the Monday. He drew the extreme outside, and this was to a large extent responsible for his defeat, for he went under to a very well-treated horse in Taurua. When Vali began to sky his tail half-way up the straight it was obvious that he did not relish his task. • w • • Volimond won the Alison Cup in fine style, but perhaps the effects of this effort told upon her, for she was soundly beaten on the second day over a shorter journey. Up to a mile she was a possibility, ft was not her true form. There are plenty of races suitable for Volimond later on, both at Ellerslie this month and later on the country circuit, and she is capable of winning another two or three handicaps before she is weighted out of them. It is generally conceded that one of the unlucky runners in the New Zealand Cup was Jaloux. This gelding figures on the same mark as Eaglet in the Auckland Cup, and he is going to be oue of the early fancies. Jaloux takes riding, and it is not very easy to get a good boy at that weight, but if fairly well served by the pilot on the day, Jaloux at long last may be found winning a good handicap. In addition to the Auckland Cup, the A.R.C. Handicap, run on New Year’s Day over a mile and a-half, will suit him. Although not regarded as a good betting proposition, Jaloux must be taken into consideration for his Ellerslie engagements. ♦ • • Judging by the two fine races run by the three-year-old Baroscope at Takapuna, he is going to develop into something good. On the first day he was pulling hard in the Alison Cup, and was finally beaten into third place. On the Monday, he was allowed to run along in front, and despite the fact that he was off the course going out of the straight, he maintained his lead and never looked in danger of defeat. Baroscope is another who promises to go well in the G.N. Derby. « « « « The big Lackham three-year-old, Gibraltar, who lightened up a lot as a result of his trip to Riccarton, has benefited considerably as a result of his let-up, and is beginning to bear quite a bright appearance again (says a Taranaki writer). However, so far his tasks have been of the lightest, but he will be sent along again this week. Though he has been nominated for Ellerslie, he is unlikely to make the trip. » • • Though Orapai figures in the Railway Handicap, he can be looked upon as a doubtful starter (says the same writer). It would not be surprising to find him being tried over a distance of ground on the Taranaki circuit during the holidays. Though the Thespians have not so far shone as distance performers, there is plenty of staying blood on the side of Orapai’s dam, who, it will be remembered, is a fullsister to Entreaty, the dam of Phar Lap, • « » The idea is prevalent at Trentham that Cimabue will not contest the Auckland Railway Handicap on Boxing Day. There is nothing the matter with Cimabue, who has done well since ho returned from Riccarton, but the plan seems to bo to take him to Awapuni and race him in the principal sprint events at the Manawatu meeting. Taking a line through his Feilding running, he will not disgrace himself wherever he is started (states a Wellington writer). He is in excellent form, and is remaining sound. The difficulty about racing him at Manawatu may be that suitable riders will not be easy to obtain. • a • Havering had only the one race at Feilding, and in that he made a most impressive showing. He would have been well backed by the public had he contested the principal handicap on the second day, but he was scratched. There are a good many awaiting the Hawera gelding’s coming appearances. • ♦ • La Poupee, who ran such a good race in the New’ Zealand Oaks nt Riccarton, is reported to be going along very nicely, and it seems to be merely a matter of her keeping right to win a good race at any time now. Phar Lap had his regular exercise jog on the lead a couple, of times round on the plough at Trentham on Saturday morning (writes “Rangatira”) and there were several visitors to the track to watch him work. He is brimming over with energy now, and his attendant’s hand was bleeding afterwards from a knock in attempting to keep him in restraint. The reticence continues as to his future movements. No passage has yet been booked for him, as far as can be ascertained in Wellington, and T. Woodcock, who has charge of him, states that he has received no advice as to the vessel on which he is to travel to America. Should Phar Lap be going at the end of the month it

will have to be by the Monowai on the 29th. The Agua Caliente Handicap is run on 20th March. • • • High Comedy improved on his first day’s second in the sprint at Takapuna by winning comfortably. He improved with his race, and now that he appears to be settling down he ought to get among the money at Ellerslie this month. High Comedy has done better over short journeys, and he was considered more of a sprinter than a middle-distance horse, but it is known that his connections expect him to run a good race in the Great Northern Derby on New Year’s Day. • • • Signifier. who ran second in the Manchester November Handicap, the race that decided the latest Irish sweepstakes, is owned and trained by the former Auckland resident, Mr. B. Davis. He is a three-year-old gelding by Harpocrate from Sunless, and in September last won the Burton Plate, one mile and six furlongs, at Limerick His best previous performance this season was a second placing over a mile and a-half at Birmingham in June. He was ridden in each race by England’s foremost horseman, G. Richards. • « • An interesting entrant at Woodville is the last Wellington Cup winner, Stanchion, who has been nominated for the Borough Handicap, seven furlongs, on the first day, and for the Gothard Memorial Handicap, a mile and a distance, On the second day. Stanchion has not been out in public since racing at the Wairarapa Easter meeting shortly after his removal from the schooling list, on which he had been placed for about a month. He was nominated for meetings earlier this season, but he had not made sufficient recovery from foot injury caused in shoeing to lie produced. He has been in steady work on his' owner, Mr. W. E. Bidwill’s, private track at Rototawai for some months, and it will be interesting to see how he shapes at Woodville, for if he makes a showing he will need to be taken into consideration for races such as the Mauawatu and Wairarapa Cups. « • • J. Fryer has a big team (says a Hawera writer) but the bulk of them will be racing in their home province. Peter Jackson is a certainty to race at Auckland, but what will accompany him is to be decided later. Peter Jackson will probably be raced at Waipa prior to the Auckland meeting. The colt is very well. The reason he was not taken up for the Takapuna Plate was that his trainer preferred him over a longer course. Green Linnet has come into her own again, and this smart little mare can be confidently expected to add further wins to her credit. A new totalisator indicator was used for the first time at Sandown Park (England) on October 21 last, and it appeared to meet with popular approval. Instead of the number of units , appearing on the board, which is visible 'from each of the rings, the approximate odds ruling at the moment were given. The odds were arranged m parallel lines, from 3 to 1 on down to long odds against. The numbers of the horses were raised like the working of a barometer to reach the requisite line. When the odds first appeared No. 10 (Musical Prince) and 13 (Sediranda) both went up to the 2 to 1 line, and No. 11 (En Garde) on the 4 to 1 line. After that the numbers of the horses moved up and down in accordance with the investments made. Five minutes later No. 11 (En Garde) and 13 (Sediranda) were on the 2 to 1 line, whilst 17 (Saint Fortunat) had gone up to the 4 to 1 mark. By this means backers were able to see at a glance the approximate rate of any horse at the moment and were saved the trouble of any mathematical calculation.
