NEW BUILDING WORK

HASTINGS' CHANGED ASPECT. SCENES OF ACTIVITY. Four important additions to the new buildings being erected in so many parts of the business area of Hastings are now being carried towards completion by the Edwards Construction Company, who have recently finished several "other buildings already occupied or about to be occupied. The largest of the four buildings now in course of erection is a block of shops and a billiard saloon between the Union Bank and the Grand Hotel site. The work is being done for Mr. D. Donovan, and on each of the two floors there will be an area of 43-10 square feet. The top floor will be used as a billiard saloon by the owner of the building, and on the ground floor there will be four up-to-date and handsome shops which will be occupied by Mr. C. Vogtherr (the Elite Bacon Co.), Mr. C. H. Bunker (Novelty Depot), Mr. Max Luttrell (hairdresser), and Mr. J. Monk (the Booteries). The building is of particularly handsome design, and has now reached the stage at which the shop-fronts and fittings arc being put into position. Another building being erected by the same company is the new building for the County Club, which will oe situated at the back of the Tourist Motor Company’s premises in Market street north. The building will be used solely for the purposes of the club, and will be equipped with the most modern equipment. The fittings and furnishings will accord with the handsomeness of the general design of the building, and these new premises will be a decided acquisition to the social life of the town. It is to be a one-storeyed building and will have a floor space of about 5000 square feet. The Edwards Construction Companv is building another block of shops between the Rialto and Roachs’ store in Heretaunga street cast for Mr. Frank McLeod. There will be five shops in the building, and the total floor space will be about 4000 square feet. Next door to that building the company is erecting a shop for Mr. Geo. Ebbett, and Messrs. Arthur Simmonds and Co. will be the tenants. That shop will have a floor space of 4300 square feet, and will be one of the most modern and best designed shops in the town. The architect for Mr. McLeod’s building, for Mr. Donovan’s, and for the County* Club, is the company’s own architect, Mr. J. T. Watson, and Mr. E. Anseombe is the architect for Mr. Ebbett's building. The total cost of all! four buildings is about £17,500.
