GAMES IN HAWKE’S BAY SECOND HASTINGS SERIES COMPLETED. TOMOANA AND OLD BOYS VICTORIOUS. The second series of matches in the Hastings senior grade cricket championship competition were completed on Saturday in ideal weather. The wickets were in good order, being a little more in favour of the batsmen than usual. As was anticipated, two outright wins were recorded, and the present state of the championship is that all four teams are on the same footing, all having four points apiece to their credit. Old Boys, at Nelson Park, scored a full victory over Wliakatu by 88 runs, after declaring for 118 for 7 wickets in the second innings. At Cornwall Park, the champions, Tomoana, had a decisive win over Hastings, who went down to the extent of five wickets. H. 5.0.8. v. WHAKATU. On the previous Saturday Old Boys in their first innings made 107 runs aud Whakatu were all out for 41. Continuing on Saturday, Old Boys declared when 118 for seven wickets, leaving Whakatu 185 to get to win, but the best they could do was 97, of which Paterson secured 35 and Probin 24. In the first innings last week Tomoana made 105 and Hastings 05. Continuing on Saturday Hastings compiled 117 in their second innings, to which Tomoana replied with 84 when they were only five wickets down, a handy four by Mitchell putting his side three in the lead and giving them a five-wicket victory. Mitchell’s (Tomoana) and Garred’s (Hastings) bowling was a feature of the afternoon's play, the former taking eight for 41 and the latter five for 25, both splendid averages. Bowling for Fruitgrowers Crnike took three for 20 and McKenzie seven for 32. Fruitgrowers did slightly better and made 78, of which Beuth compiled 30, Porter 12 and Crombie 10. Bowling for H.S.O B. Rosenberg took three for 21). Bartie one for 28 and Steadman five for 11 H.S.O B. commenced their second innings and were 52 for six wickets when stumps were drawn, Jonson being 27 not out. Craike took 4 for 24 and 8. McKenzie 2 for 10. Albion v Tomoana. Batting first Tomoana compiled 111, of which Broadhurst made 27, R. Ball 17 Goodall 15, Hood 15 and Henderson 11. Bowling for Albion, Seed took seven for 68, Startup two for 26 and Palmer 1 for 12. In reply, Albion

could only reach 46 before they were all dismissed, the best score being Marks with 15 and Seed with nine. Bowling for Tomoana, Ball took six for 17 and Goodall four for eight. Albion were sent in again to bat but did little better, their total only reaching 53. Bowling for Tomoana McKenzie took six for seven, Ball one for 15, Hatton one for 13, and Goodall one for nine. Tomoana won by an innings and 12 runs. NAPIER GAMES. OPENING MATCHES FINISHED. TWO OUTRIGHT WINS. At Napier the opening series of matches were completed, two outright victories being recorded. Old Boys defeated St. Johns by 105 runs after declaring at 90 for four wickets in the second innings. The best batting performance was that of T. Reaney (O.B.) who knocked up 62 in the second innings. H. Reaney was 'he most successful bowler, taking three for 37 and five for 45 in the two innings. United just managed to save an innings defeat following a collapse in the second innings against Tech. Old Boys who won by nine wickets.

H. 5.0.8. v. ST. JOHN’S. Old Boys made a good start in their match against St. John’s by knocking up 244 in their first innings. St. John’s replied with 148. Much to tho surprise 61 everyone, the latter’s tail “wagged” in uo uncertain manner, the lust four batsmen knocking up 61 runs. Old Boys declared their second innings closed when four wickets had fallen for 90, leaving St. John’s 187 to get to win with about two hours to play. The steady bowling of H. Reaney. UNITED Although United made a promising beginning against Technical 0.8. by knocking up 211 in their first innings, they went to pieces in their second strike, being dismissed for 75. Their failure was due to the steady bowling of Pirie and E. Elliott, both of whom maintained good length. Elliott secured four wickets for 14 and Pirie four for 36. Technical made 275 in their first innings, which left them only 12 runs to make to win. This they accomplished in their second innings at a cost of one wicket. Taradale lias commenced its season in no uncertain manner by gaining a decisive victory over Scinde, winning by

Other double-figure scorers were Duthie 38, Moir 19 not out, H. Wilson 17, and F. Wilson 10. The following trundlers were successful for Scinde: Tyres, four for 64; O’Brien, one for 69; Bowland, one for 24; Forsyth, one for 53; Hughe.., one for 51: and Thompson, one for 18. In their second innings, Scinde made IS7. O’Brien with 68, and Moss with 53 both gave good batting displays. Forsyth made 14, Kennedy 11 and Salthouse 11. For Taradale Ellis was the most successful bowler, securing six wickets for 5. Wilson took two for 29 and Boggs one for 26. The match concluded after Taradale had lost two wickets for 17 in their second innings. Of this McKinley made 13. The wickets were shared by Olsen and Thornton, with one for six and one for ten respectively. H. 5.0.8. v. St. John’s.

H. 5.0.8. gained a four-point victory against St. John’s, who made a bad start by being dismissed in their first innings for 73 Old Bovs replied with 221. Triggs 24, McArtney 23, Lee 16 not out and Hatch 10. For Old Boys, Hawthorne secured five wickets for 30, Smith three for 14 aud Cox one for four. High School . Technical 0.8. A four-pointer was also gained by High School against Technical 0.8., the clop' stages of the match being exciting. With eight wickets down for 112 and 37 to make in something over half an hour, Technical made a valiant effort to avoid disaster, failing in their attempt, however, by 21 runs. The play for the previous Saturday closed when the two teams had completed an innings each. High Schiol made 118 ami Teel ical 137. Continuing the match on Saturday afternoon, School knocked up 167 in their second innings. A fine display was given by Palmer, who made 50. Gagaham made 32, Alexander 18. Braithwaite 18. Simpson 13 and Evans 11.. The bowling for Technical 0.8 was as follows: Walker five for 44. Rees two for six, Champion one for 21, Marcroft one for 24, Brimmer one for 37. Technical made 127 in their second strike, of which total Champion wa.' responsible for 55. He gave a sound display of bright batting before being caught. The only other double-figure scorers were Marcroft and Walker, who made 15 each. For School, Simpson secured three wickets for 13, Braithwaite three for 34. Mahony two for .17 anil Benson one for 35. United v. Swailcs. In spite of a promising start made by the new Swailes team, United gain ed a four-point victory. United batted first and made 111, to which Swailes replied with 168. United made a better showing in their second innings, however, and also accounted for the Swailes batsmen cheaply, thereby gaining a vic. tory. THIRD GRADE SOME NARROW WINS Technical 0.8. v. High School (A) Technical 0.8. defeated High School (A) in a two innings match by 17 runs, thereby gaining a four-point victory. Batting first, School made 85 (Wilson 21, Morley 27 and McKenzie 11 not out). For Technical the most success, ful bowlers were Doherty with four wickets, Pirie with three and Kronk with three. Technical replied to school’s innings with 71, of which Crozier made 25. Holt secured five wickets and Cox two. The second innings of High School closed for 69 (Bickerstaff 20 and Quayle 14). Technical’s best bowler was Pirie, who took five wickets. Technical batted well for the remainder of the afternoon, making 90 just in time to obtain victory, four wickets having fallen. Pirie made 30, Northe .14, Doherty 10, and Bowman 19 not out. For High School, Cox secured three wickets. High School (C) v. High School (B). A win after two innings each was secured by High School (C) against High School (B). The only details available are those of the first innings of each team. The C’s batted first and made 58. Of this total Younghusband made 25 and Brown 10. In their answering knock the B team made 81, the highest scorer being Hammond with 32.
