V.R.C. MEETING CLOSES VEILMOND'S FISHER PLATE. PHAR LAP AN ABSENTEE. Melbourne, Nov. 8. The weather was sultry for the races. Phar Lap was scratched for the Fisher Plate at 12.24. It was reported that he is going to America shortly. The part owner, Mr. Davis, goes on Thursday. Dermid was fourth early, but beat the fast finishing Stephen in the Batman Stakes. The rider, Cook, won the race last year on Homedale. Liberal led always in the Flemington Stakes. He was bred by the owner, Mr. A. G. Hunter. The trainer is Foulsham, who had Mollison. Veilmond, trained by the New Zealander George Price, led always in the Fisher Plate. The rider, Pike, won previously on Phar Lap, Gothic and Pantheon.

Cimbriau was last at the home turn, but finished brilliantly in the V.R.C. Handicap. It was his rider’s (Pike’s) second win during the afternoon and sixth for the meeting. Cimbrian is a half-brother to Heroic. Five of the nine starters failed to complete the course in the Victoria Steeples. Fullerton, rider of the winner, won the Cup Hurdles on Taciturn. Glenanton finished brilliantly, and won the Final Handicap in the last stride. The rider, Knox, won the Caulfield Cup on Dennis Boy and the Cantala Stakes on Dermid. The stakes at the meeting totalled £27,542. Results:— Batman Stakes.—Dermid (8.4) 1, Stephen (8.7) 2, Old Ming (8.7) 3. Won >v three-quarters of a length. Nine starters. Oratorian was fourijh. Spring Meeting saw the N.Z.-bred Veilmond a winner in the w.f.a. event. It was, however, something of a bloodless victory, as there was only one other runner and with no great claim to distinction. Idle Banter, by the way, is the product of an Absurd mare. Another from New Zealand went very near scoring at Flemington, Second Wind, bred at Mr. T. H. Lowry’a “Okawa’’ Stud, being narrowlv beaten into second place in the chief handicap event of the day. Phar Lap’s absence from the Fieher Plate, which under ordinary circumstances must have been easy money for him, would suggest that he has not yet recovered from his efforts in the Melbourne Cup. The rumour is again mentioned of his being destined to race in the land of the dollar and dime, and colour is given to it by a statement that one of his owners is leaving for there this week. Assuming this io be correct, it would point to the champion appearing to have suffered no illeffects. Bad luck appears to be pursuing the Hunting Song—Heather Spray gelding over Sydney way. At Rosehill on Saturday he had again to put up with a second placing. Vertigern could get no further forward than third in his undertaking. It is not often we get turf results cabled from Brisbane, nor is any of those sent us to-day of particular interest over here. The only representative of New Zealand blood among the winners given is Myles-la-Coplen—-it was no Irishman spelled the name that way—whoso dam is the Dominionbred mare Evelyn Soult. Mr. E. J. Watt had his now customary luck in running third in the Derby with Ptolemy. ROSEHILL RESULTS Sydney, Nov. 8. At the Rosehill races the Maiden resulted: —Double Dutch 7.12 (Weiss) 1, Lavington 9.4 (Bartie) 2, Sir Morion 8.0 Pratt) 3. Eleven starters. Won by a length and a half. Time, 1.54}.
