THE WAIPUKURAU COUNCIL. BUSINESS OF THE MONTH. The monthly meeting of the Waipukurau County Council was held on Saturday, Mr A. C. Russell presiding over Crs. C. Chambers, W. T. Edgecombe. IV. J. Edgecombe, J. 11. Kibblewhite, L. M. Monckton, M. Tansey and J. A. Swinburn. The Waipawa Hospital Board forivardifd a return showing the existing system of rating as compared with the amounts payable by local bodies if the rating was on a basis of 50 —50 capital valuation and population.—Received. The White New Zealand League asked for support in its endeavour to more adequately control the arrival and

departure of Asiatics.—On the motion of Cr. Tansey it was decided to support the league. The Prime Minister requested the council to make arrangements for the observance of the two minutes’ silence on Armistice Day.—The request was acceded to. The secretary of the New Zealand Empire Shopping Week Committee extended a welcome to councillors to be present at the opening ceremony tomorrow. —The invitation was accepted. The sanitary inspector, Mr T. A. Milne, advised that he had obtained an assurance that a dead horse in a paddock on the Maharakeke road would be buried immediately.—Received. The traffic inspector forwarded particulars of recent breaches of traffic reg 'ations, and it was decided to take action against the offenders. Dealing with the question of unemployment the clerk was instructed to get into touch with the district engineer with a view to having a gang of men placed on the Tourerc-Whetuknra road to metal approximately 2J miles of clay surface. On the motion of Cr. Kibblewhite the clerk was appointed an inspector under the Motor Vehicles Act. Main highways estimates for the ensuing year were received showing that subsidies for general maintenance had been increased from £2 for £1 to £3 for £l. The estimated expenditure on roads under the council’s control was Napier Wellington via Wairarapa. £710; Waipukurau-Matamau via Hatuma, £325; Dannevirke-Waipukurau via Porangahau, £486. The bank credit balance at the end of October was £lOBB 6s Bd. Accounts totalling £295 18s lOd were passed for payment.
