“NO-MORE-WAR” MOVEMENT
NAPIER BRANCH MEETING. A meeting of the Napier branch of the “No More War” movement was held on Thursday last, when arrangements were made for the distribution of school prizes in connection with the “Peace Essay Competition.” These prizes have been made possible by the generosity of the “Ensom Trust,” whereby a sum of money is made available each year to any approved school or organised body which complies with the terms of the bequest, which stipulate that one half of the amount of money allotted shall be devoted to books relating to peace subjects. The books selected were on view and all members were enthusiastic as to their sterling value. They include copies of “11,000 Beautiful Things,” Arthur Mee; “The Story of the League of Nations.” a tale for young people; “Looking Backward.” E. Bellamy; “Ten Years of World Co-operation,” with a preface by Sir Eric Drummond. The prize winners are Maureen Moss (St. Joseph’s Convent); Grace Atkins, (Meeanee Public School); Arnold Goudie (Westshore); Annie Wood (Meeanee); Betty Scott (St. Joseph’s Convent) ; Joy Burton (Taradale Public School).
The branch decided to forward a remit to the annual conference “That a pledge be obtained from every candidate at the forthcoming general election to vote for a Bill to appeal for the people for decision before taking part in active service overseas.” The secretary was also directed to write a letter of thanks and appreciation to the Secondary Education Board, which, acting on the suggestion of the principal. Mr. W. T. Foster, decided at their last meeting that one day per year bo placed aside for the instruction of pupils attending the Napier Boys’ High School in the aims and ideals of the League of Nations, and to suggest respectfully that the same instruction should be extended to the Girls’ High School. Another interesting report showed Napier’s contribution to the signature petition for world disarmament which is to be presented to the League of Nations next February has reached the substantial total of 1205 signatures.
