CHOW CHOW PICKLE. A request comes for a recipe for Chow Chow pickle. This is quite a good recipe: Take any sort of vegetables, such as cauliflower, beans, peas, green tomatoes, tiny cucumbers, and onions, and cut them all up. (Later in the year there are plenty of suitable vegetables.) Then make a brine of HL of salt to 4 quarts of water, and let all the vegetables stand in it for 15 hours. Then put all in the preserving pan and boil for five minutes. Then pour the water off. Next make a mixture of 4 tablespoons mustard, 1 tablespoon curry powder, 1 tablespoon tumeric, 1 cup sugar, t cup flour (mixed smooth with r little cold vinegar) and 2 quarts of vinegar. Boil until thick. Then put the vegetables in, and boil for 5 minutes longer. Screw down into preserving jars. Try Oatcakes: Take 3 cups of oatmeal and one cup of flour, add 2 teaspoons of sugar and one of salt. Rub into the dry ingredients 1 tablespoon of dripping. Mix the whole with a cup of boiling water, in which a teaspoon of soda has been dissolved. Knead well. Roll out not too thin. Bake in rather a cool oven. When ready to be taken from the oven the oatcake should be quite hard all over. Walnut Bread; Four breakfast cups of flour, 1 breakfast cup of sugar, 1 breakfast cup of walnuts, 2 breakfast cups of milk, 4 teaspoons baking powder 2 eggs. Rub the dry ingredients together, add the nuts and milk and beaten eggs. Make into two loaves, and bake for 1 hour. Little Chocolate Cakes: Four ounces butter, 6oz powdered suga.. soz flour, 6oz grated chocolate, 5 eggs, 10 drops vanilla, i teaspoon baking powder. Beat the butter and sugar together until creamy. Add alternately half the chocolate and an egg, and half the flour and an egg, till all the ingredients are mixed. Beat well the whole time. Bake in greased patty-pans, about 15 minutes in a quick oven.
