EDUCATION AFFAIRS

HAWKE’S BAY BOARD. MONTHLY MEETING. The monthly meeting of the Hawke’s Bay Education Board was held in Napier to-day. Present: Messrs. G. A. Maddison (chairman), H. 8. M. Quigley, C. Lassen, R. Sains, bury, R C. Wright, W. Fraser, T. A. Coleman, W. Cuthbertson, J. Clark Thompson, Revs. R. B. Waugh and F. L. Frost. In connection with the erection of school buildings in wood, the Minister of Education, in acknowledging receipt of the board’s letter, said it was gratifying to find that the board was prepared to speak out boldly against the former policy of constructing school buildings in brick, as the experience of the board, owing to the recent lamentable earthquake, was unique, and must, prove valuable to other boards, and indeed to the public generally. He was sure that the members felt, as he did, that it was a public duty for anyone with that experience to give others the benefit of it. The whole question has resolved itself into a consideration of whether the industry should be considered, or the safety of the children, and to that there could be but one answer. —Received. _ ' In connection with the re-organisa-tion of primary and post-primary education in Hastings, the department advised that the question was receiv. ing consideration. In regard to the unemployment of teachers, the department advised that registered unemployed male teachers may, under scheme 5, be employed as additional assistants in the schools provided that it was found practicable to operate on the ration basis of two, three, or four days per week under the rules of the scheme. Employment was to be given through the Labour Department and the amount paid was to be claimed from the Unemployment Board in the usual way. The chief inspector stated that when the schools re-opened in September it was possible that some relieving positions would be available, which would help to give relief to the unemployed male teachers. To engage them under No. 5 scheme only two days’ employment per week would mean that they could not be given any responsible work, but that they would undoubtedly be of assistance in doing clerical work. Tho matter was referred to the inspector and the secretary for favourable consideration, The Westshore School committee wrote endorsing tho action of several country school committees regarding dental treatment for children attending these schools, and pointed out that no treatment has as yet been provided for Westshore children. The chairman said that the board was in sympathy with dental treatment for country school children, and pointed out that the dental clinic was not functioning, but it was hoped to have it going shortly. On the motion of Rev. F. L, Frost, it was decided to inform the committee of the board’s concern in the matter, and to express the hope that facilities would be soon available.

In connection with the proposed school site at Tutira the Department of Lands and Survey advised that the reservation of an area of 4 acres wus being considered.—lt was decided co ask the department to expedite the matter, as there was an urgent need for a larger school than the present building. The board decided to investigate a request made by the settlers in the Kaiwaka South Settlement for the establishment of a school. The matter of the extension of tho school site at To Awn was referred to the architect for a report. The board approved of a grunt of £lO towards the cost of gtound improvements at Taradale.
