FOSTERING INDUSTRIES
THE DEVELOPMENT BOARD. TO BE ESTABLISHED SOON. Wellington, Aug. 20. References to the proposed development of industries board was made by the Hon. P. A. de la Ferrells, Minister of Industries and Commerce, when opening the conference of the New Zealand Manufacturers ’ Federation to-day. The Minister said that far some years, there had been an agitation for some organisation which might investigate industries in New Zealand, inquire into their betterment and consider projects fer the increased sale of New Zealand products. He was pleased to be able to tell delegates that in the next fortnight he hoped to see a development of industries beard established in New Zealand. The Minister said lie could ’net announce Ike personnel yet. He himself, the Prime Minister, Mr Clinkard {secretary of the Department of Industries and Commerce) and Dr. Marsden (secretary of the Department of Industrial and Scientific Research) were still discusring the formation ami personnel of the board. It was desired to make the board comprehensive, because iniu-stry from the scientific side as well as from tho industrial side had to be taken into consideration.
It was hoped to set up a board which would be n great advantage to the manufacturers of the country. The board would really lie nu ndvisnrv hoard, and would go carefully into the proposals made by the people Of Now Zealand in tho matter of certain industries, the policy of such industries, and possible assistance to existing industries, and would then be able to place proposals before the Government. If national pr other assistance was required the Government would be in possession of all the facts. At present a number of men might nsk for Government assistance, and tho Government had to accept their .word. The board would be composed of men apart from Government offi. cials. It would take evidence investigate projects carefully and make recommendations. Co-operation among the board, the manufacturers and the Governent Should safeguard new industries, sec that they secured a proper start and that they had a prospect of .success.
