LOAN CONVERSION. AMERICAN COMMENT. N®»* York, Aug. 19. The “New kork Times,” in a leader on the Australian loan conversion says: “Australia means business. She has set herself resolutely on the path of rehabilitation and prosperity; she has maintained her own selfrespect; she has acquired honour and. perhaps, provoked envy in the eyes of other nations.” The paper refers to the activities or Mr Lang, and adds: “Even the obstreperous Mr Lang had to learn meekness; he had to come hat ia hand to the Loan Council.” CHRISTIAN ENDEAVOUR. WHAT THE WORLD NEEDS. Sydney, Aug. 20. The International Christian Endeavour Convention services were continued to-day. The Rev. F. Baward made a plea for church unity rather than union pf the churches. He said different forms of worship were necessary for the fullest expression of religious ideas. The Revs. R. Bye, of Tasmania, and H. Prouse, Queensland, appealed for loyalty to denominational missions, which were the greatest, means of winning the world to Christianity, and urged the churches to combat the materialism which was rampant throughout the world. The Rev. Lionel Fletcher, during a lunch hour talk to business men, said if the world was to be set right they must start by imp'loying the teachings ef Christianity. No politician nor military man was capable of putting the world right. FIRST N.S.W. LOTTERY. WOMAN GETS FIRST PRIZE. Sydney, Aug. 20. The first prize of £5OOO in the .first New South Wales lottery, -which was drawn to-day, went to a woman living in Manly with ticket 40977. The second went to East Sydney, the third to Epping, a suburb, and the fourth to Liverpool, an outer suburb. A tremendous crowd gathered to witness the drawing at Her Majesty’s Theatre.
