FIRE
BLAZE AT THE PORT. But for tho prompt action of the Port Fire Brigade, a block of old buildings at the corner of Waghorno and Stafford streets, Port Ahuriri, would probably have been totally destroyed by firo at a late hour last night. The outbreak occurred at about 11.30 p.m. in the two-storied premises occupied by T. B. Bax, second-hand dealer and storekeeper, and W. Fletcher, restaurateur. The blaze, which started in the store, spread rapidly to the living quarters over tho shop. Mr and Mrs Bax had to escape by sliding down a rope suspended from a window and Mr and Mi's Fletcher escaped similarly. The damage to the building, which is owned by the Denholm Estate, was confined to tho portion occupied by Bax. The verandah and the front window of the restaurant were broken. Bax’s furniture and effects were insured for £250, and the shop fittings and stock In tho Alliance Office for £5O; Fletcher’s effects were insured for £2OO in tho Standard Office.
